I was born in Canada, but have spent most of my adult life traveling and working abroad. Along the way, I've climbed Mt. Fuji, touched noses with a Maori elder in New Zealand, snorkeled in Fiji, survived a tsunami evacuation in Samoa (and more recently, Nagasaki), snuggled a koala in Australia, chaperoned high schoolers on a bus tour of England, thrown up in the Czech Republic, attended grad school in Malta, worked on an archaeological dig in Spain, had laser therapy in Germany, taught at a university in Hungary, scaled pyramids in Mexico... Translation is my bread and butter, and writing is my passion.

English Plays for Children 5 : Six More Easy ESL Plays by Shelley Vernon English Plays for Children 5 : Six More Easy ESL Plays by Shelley Vernon April 24, 2012 $3.97 4891 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
Following her BA degree in languages at Durham University, England in 1989 Shelley Vernon took a TEFL qualification and became a teacher. She taught in language schools in the UK and privately around the world for several years. Having been largely bored to death herself while in school Shelley was determined not to put her own students through the same desperate clock-watching and she always strove to prepare fun, stimulating classes that pupils would enjoy and remember. She taught using a variety of methods, including the driest textbooks imaginable, which called for large amounts of creativity in order to make lessons more interesting. However it was only when she started to teach children French as a second language in 1999 that she really discovered the joy of teaching. She created a method from her experiences to share with other teachers. She has since shared her ideas with thousands of teachers around the world, bringing enthusiasm and a love of learning into the classroom, as well as great results. Shelley's approach concentrates on enhancing listening and speaking skills through language games which involve repetition and through fluency activities which have genuine communicative value rather than artificial conversation. She created her best-selling "English Language Games for Children" and followed this up with badly needed resources for preschool children, including games and a curriculum laid out in twenty illustrated stories. Having taught preschool children at a Montessori nursery Shelley knows exactly what a teacher needs to do this successfully and stories are a stunningly useful element. Her ESL Games and Activities for Adults are also highly praised by teachers around the world. In addition to her degree in foreign languages, Shelley also holds a university degree in music (2000) from Canterbury Christchurch College. She loves classical music, and enjoys keeping fit with skiing, yoga and walking her adorable cocker spaniel. She also writes songs and has preschool songs CDs too! She speaks occasionally at conferences. (IATEFL Cardiff 2009 and YALS Belgrade 2011) Her new year's resolution is 'Be kind to all people, animals and things, all of the time, no matter what.' (Hawkins) Teaching English Games supports Charities around the world.

The Mighty, Humble COMMA. by Graham Murray The Mighty, Humble COMMA. by Graham Murray April 07, 2012 $0.99 2894 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
I began my writing career quite by accident. Even while still in Grade school, I had an extraordinary knack for turning everyday events into stories, which I did. I was also obsessed with grammar, punctuation and spelling, always wanting to know more and always wanting to get it right. I’m still working on that one. To me, even at that young age, all of life seemed to be a series of stories; some sad, some happy, some tragic, and some . . . well, some were simply unbelievable and beyond words. It was those stories that piqued my interest and the reason why, today, much of my fiction is based around stories that either defy belief, or are so emotionally intense that they are difficult to comprehend and absorb. Unlike most writers, I am sorry to admit that I really do not remember when my first story was published. It must have been the mid 70s and was probably in Reader’s Digest. I do, however, remember the first award I received. I was eight years old, and was awarded a prize at school for Best Creative Writer, whatever that meant. I had written a simple, descriptive piece of prose, one page long about . . . well that story is actually published today and remains a mystery to many who read it as they try to guess what the story is about. It is called “The Return”. If you ever come across it, see if you can determine what the story is about. To date, nobody has ever guessed correctly first time, although one man did get it on his second guess. So, I began collecting my stories, as I used to just throw them away. Before long, I had a backlist as long as your arm and didn’t know what to do with them. I started sending them out to be published, and that’s when the bug really bit down hard and I become a ‘word junkie’. Yes, I admit; I’m a writing addict in a big way. Still, it wasn't all bad as I now make a living through writing, which is quite possibly the best job in the world. I’m no millionaire (almost), or JK, or Stephen King, and I know what an adverb is, but I’m a damn site happier than most folks I see embroiled in the corporate world, who always seem so miserable and are always looking to ‘move on’ or ‘move up’. I left the Joneses and the materialistic world behind years ago and have never looked back. It was a soul-cleansing experience as I now have only what I require, not what I want, because that way lies madness. Every day I see thousands of stories, just waiting to be written and it’s true what they say; that every writer includes a bit of themselves in their stories. I do the same thing, except that I will never reveal which bits are true and which are fiction. That I leave to my readers to decide. My stories are unusual inasmuch as I tend to make every word count, and in many of my tales, there are clues dotted around which, if missed by the reader, can result in them misunderstanding, or missing the point entirely. Readers who skim over paragraphs will most likely miss a great deal of what I write, especially in my short stories, where the ultimate clue can be a single word. While writing, I try to engage the reader as much as possible and then drop the bombshell at the very end; usually in the last paragraph or, sometimes, as the last line. This technique has held me in good stead over the years and I keep doing it. It seems that none of my readers ever tires of waiting to read that final line to find out what really happens. My work may not be to everyone’s liking, buy hey, you can’t win ‘em all. I write for the sheer thrill of it, and dedicate all of my work to my six-year old daughter, who remains my finest achievement and is the inspiration for most of my work. If you’re ever stuck for story ideas, watch a six-year old at play and open your mind. See the world through their eyes and your own world will be opened to possibilities you never imagined possible. If you like my work, tell 40,000 of your closest friends. If you don’t, tell me, and then tell me why. We are all of us merely players in a world gone mad, each of us trying to make our way in a time when the sky is the limit and we are limited only by our imaginations. As I completed my two degrees in medicine, I also write a lot of non-fiction; some of it medical and some of about publishing and the English language. The way I take a break from writing fiction, is to write some non-fiction. Weird, I know, but it works for me. Happy reading . . .
The Turkish Language Explained for English Speakers by John Guise The Turkish Language Explained for English Speakers by John Guise March 31, 2012 $9.99 72363 words Sample 20%
Author bio:
John Guise is a 76 year old Turkophile born and raised in England. In his retirement he has settled in New Zealand. He has also set up a website, Manisa Turkish, which offers an easy way to learn Turkish for everybody. John Guise first visited Turkey for a holiday in Alanya 1979. A year later he started to work in Manisa. Living in Izmir he worked as a Professional Technical Engineering Manager in a factory producing diesel engined industrial vehicles. Besides a daily journey from Izmir to the Manisa factory for two consecutive years, he also found time to visit Istanbul, Ankara, Bursa, Balikesir, Nevsehir, Ayvalik, Isparta and Bodrum for short holiday trips. At the end of his working contract he returned to his own country. To show his gratitude to the Turkish people for various kindnesses shown to him, he decided to teach Turkish to fellow Language learners. In 2001 he passed the SOAS University examination in the Turkish language. After this he began to teach Turkish at his local Technical College at Coventry in the UK. He has also given private lessons in his own home. John Guise himself had studied Latin and Greek in his own grammar school days. Also he can speak and write some French and Spanish. Before he began to work in Turkey he had said to himself, "I now have a chance to learn Turkish.." He states that because he already knew some languages then it was easier to assimilate Turkish. His treatise "The Turkish Language Explained for English Speakers" is the result of his many years learning and teaching this fascinating language. In it he explains the various difficulties the learner may encounter along their learning curve. Many of these differences between English and Turkish are often glossed over or not even mentioned in many already published Language courses. Grammar is kept to a minimum and explanations are clear and to the point. It is a book about the Turkish language and its grammar that you will keep by your side from your first lesson through intermediate and advanced stages of your studies.
