Recently I was told that 95% of Lakeland was unexplored in an Archaeological sense. With the abolition of Fox Hunting in 2005 there was a slight chance that places and structures associated with fox hunting would in the fullness of time join them, lost in time and memory. It was with this in mind that I began to compile material for my website. It is not my intention for it to glorify or be used as propaganda for or against hunting, but simply to record associations with a 'sport' traditional to Lakeland for over 300 years. I am a native Lakelander with roots going back to 1700, the 4th generation to follow hounds, with ancestors who stood on the cold tops at dawn, moved the heavy Lakeland stone to free trapped terriers and also 'carried the horn' on occasions. I hope this site is of interest to you. Hunting will not come back in the foreseeable future, perhaps not at all, but for three hundred years hunting and the church were the central thread to many communities. This is a part of the story.

In the 50s and 60s, the San Fernando Valley was mostly farms, ranches and bare acreage. Low desert, the untamed land was covered with sagebrush, tumbleweeds and a bit of cactus. Winter rains encouraged the growth of large fields full of wild barley and golden poppies. Summer brought the hot, dry Santa Ana devil winds. The tall grass, its seed heads chattering in the strong gusts, turned golden brown. The valley was the home of many western movies, movie stars and Mr. Ed--who lived right across the dirt street from me. Lassie resided just two blocks down. We lived smack in the middle of the valley, surrounded by movie ranches, circuses, carnivals, horse trainers, and movie stables: Hudkin Brothers, George Spahn, Fat Jones, Ralph McCutcheon and Glenn Randall. All of these were my stomping grounds at various times, sometimes just hanging out, sometimes helping with the horses. My dad, John Kemsley, was known as the ponyman. He kept a herd of twenty ponies for his carnival and for movie work. Dad introduced me to the world of horses as soon as I could sit up. At six months of age, he put me in the saddle for the first time. That was the beginning of a lifelong love affair. The cowboys said I learned to walk when I fell off. That may be true. My earliest memory is of walking home from a nearby ravine after being dumped, once again, by my black and white pinto pony, Prince. I hated that walk and vowed to never get tossed again. It was a vow I could never quite keep, but it sure did improve my seat. Prince and I worked things out and began returning home together. I still feel more at home astride a horse than I do on the ground. Our ponies worked in many movies and T.V. series: Ginger was the mascot on The Mickey Mouse Club and the star of Robert Mitchum‘s The Red Pony. A group of our ponies raced in Ronald Reagan’s Stallion Road. Fay Wray fell in love with Beauty in The Wedding March. Tiny little Beauty was also the first USC Trojan mascot, appearing at half time during the games and prancing along with the USC band in the Rose Parade. Pixie galloped to glory in The Annie Oakley series as Todd Oakley’s pony. And Gene Autry was my first boss, hiring me at eight-years-old to ride as Calamity in The Buffalo Bill Jr. series. I worked on other shoots in various capacities, but that first thrill of riding down the street of a western town right beside my hero, Dick Jones, is the most memorable. As an adult, I trained show horses and their riders, developing many into champions. Horses still grace my life, calling to me every morning and softly saying good night as the sun sets. Growing up amid the people, horses and places who created the outstanding westerns of the era left me with a lifelong fascination of the Old West, especially the women who trudged across the plains and tamed a wild land. These passions highlight my writing and bring a smile while remembering the great horses and people who have blessed my life.

After those 25 years, my next career was in public education, which was something I never intended to do. Getting "drafted" into teaching and time as an Academic Coordinator was very interesting and I do so love the students and teachers, administrators, and staff members I met. I'm very proud of our students. After six years, I left teaching and moved near my son and his family. I became a Master Gardener and Master Composter, joined local organizations, and have been able to enjoy more time with my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. are grown and I have beautiful grandchildren I am thrilled that my professional focus now is limited to writing. Born 1928 in Bethehem, Orange Free State, South Africa. My parents were also born there. I schooled at St Henry's, Durban. I then attended Rhodes University in Grahamstown from 1945 to mid year 1946. Having been acepted by Oxford University, I sailed through Suez on a converted troopship full of young people going to study in Europe. I lived in Worcester College for two years before having to live in digs with friends. I then stdied retailing and textiles in London, visiting cotton and woollen mills in Manchester and other northern England cities. During this period I was able to visit western Euopean countries as the Cold War settled in. I made many friends in Scandinavia and the Netherlands,although many Dutch mocked my "kinder taal" of Afrikaans. In 1951 I journeyed home by boat Naples to Alexandria and then by train, bus and paddle steamer, up the Nile, ever southwards to my home in Westville. I worked for the family business established by my grandfather, George Walter Ross. I did not see much of him but my Campbell grandparents were much closer and I loved them. To me the words "oupa" always hads a ring of kindness to it. I married and had many children, enjoying playing with them and telling stories I made up depending on what sort of tale they seemed to like. When my wife of 46 years died the three daughters who were now living in Australia invited me to move abroad, to Western Australia, which I did in 2005. Researched and wrote Boer War books from 2001.
