How to be Creative - A Passport to Creativity by Peter Harris How to be Creative - A Passport to Creativity by Peter Harris April 09, 2012 $0.99 8979 words Sample 30%
Author bio:
Peter Harris, aka 'The Wizard of Eutopia' Writer, painter, sculptor, inventor, imagineer, founder of Cafe Eutopia and the School of Wisdom and Wizardry. [Updated 09 04 12] ‘I have abandoned my quest for Truth, and am now looking for a good Fantasy.’ – Ashleigh Brilliant (Not really - I want it all! But fantasy may be a safer container for our truth-to-date than most alternatives) Peter Harris lives in Kaiwaka, in the North of New Zealand. Since 2001 he has been (as finances permit) building a sculptural inspirational space called Café Eutopia. He describes Eutopia as ‘an organic café, a temple to Beauty, Truth, Freedom and Love, and a bookshop - not necessarily in that order.’ (For lots more on that vision, and photos, see www.eutopia.co.nz). He is also writing a fantasy pentalogy, The Apples of Eden (www.applesofaeden.com), in collaboration with his older brother and generous patron John Harris of Greenstone Pictures, and has written and self-published other books - fiction, non-fiction and some in between, including The Icon of Ainenia, Fantastic Ferrocement, and A Passport to Eutopia. (www.mapofeutopia.com). To further this publishing passion he started a digital print-on-demand business called e-press (now sold) and developed a method of binding, hand-embossing book covers, and more recently, ‘edge-branding’ antique-style books. He has written a short film script with brother John, and developed a serial YA sci-fi fantasy proposal for TV, then turned it into a book: The Nautilus Project. He spent much of his earlier life (between small business ventures making spinning wheels, clocks, photoframes, trophies, recycled tyre pots etc) in the quest for Truth. He studied at Otago, getting a BA in classical Hebrew and Greek and in the process moving from radical Christianity to angsty agnosticism. Then (in 1990) he left manufacturing to study Philosophy at Auckland University and in 1995 wrote a now-infamous proto-wiki MA thesis called Process and Inquiry in a database format. Now, as a more or less free-thinking Neoplatonist/Pagan, his main focus is on Beauty and Love, and inspiring others by what he creates in buildings, art and books. The latest focus is the Story Ark, where Peter has started the first New Leaf Network book-binding and self-publishing group (see www.newleafnetwork.org); and the Wheel of Wisdom Hall at the back of the Ark, where he is developing the vision of the School of Wisdom and Wizardry, based on the Tree of Life diagram and Wheel of Wisdom game (see wheelofwisdom.wordpress.com), and the Tree of Life staff, representing the power of humans to ground a bit of heaven on a bit of earth (thus creating ‘Eutopias’ - Good places). Last millennium, in 1977, he and his wife Raewyn (gardener, mother, partner in the various ventures ill-fated or otherwise) married. Now they live in an extended housetruck on their land by the Kaipara harbour, where they try to fit in some gardening (and homebuilding) when not working on Eutopian quests of one form or another, centred around Café Eutopia and more recently the Book Ark. They have four (mostly) grown-up children.

Demand Side Economics by Alan Harvey Demand Side Economics by Alan Harvey April 08, 2012 $3.99 60940 words Sample 30%
Author bio:
I wanted to study economics from early in my academic career. But even as an undergraduate I could see that the discipline of economics, as taught, at least at the large state university I attended, was ill-suited to the real world. An episode in which the only radical economist on the faculty was purged, a man whose classes were full of engaged students, darkened the experience. The economics major seemed to be a discipline for people to learn things that other people could not understand, so to promote job security. In four years in the early 1990s I heard the name Keynes mentioned only twice in lecture, and then it was mispronounced. (It's KANES, not KEENS.) Suspecting they might be hiding the good and useful stuff, I persevered, but I never got the keys. The cabinets with the curriculum connected to the real world remained locked. Later I was to discover the cabinets were empty. The assumptions that could not stand up to the common sense of a college freshman underlay the entire field. Critical gaps in reasoning were puttied in with wishful thinking or outright error. At the same time I came up against a personal reality. I was already in my forties with family. I looked out at the elementary assumptions of perfectly competitive markets and perfect information and how it plainly did not correspond to even one real world situation. Monopoly and oligopoly ruled. Even restaurants were rewarded more for location and less for quality of food or service. Prices in the real world responded less to supply and demand and more to manipulation by market power or government regulation and subsidy, or to macro forces outside the individual markets. Yet the theoretical fabric of economics as a science was woven with these feeble threads. Economics I could see even then was a science of human behavior. Mathematics was suitable for thermodynamics or Newtonian physics, but plainly in a system that was not closed and where there were no independent variables unless by assumption, the math’s application to economics delivered results that worked only in a hypothetical world. And for all the precision of the econometric models and their complete fit to the statistics of the past, when applied to the future, the results were miserable. (I was to discover that this failure of mathematics could be mitigated by introducing real world mimics of dynamics and historic time vs. the ignoring of time or at best using chronological T, T+1, T+2… time.) My later forecasting dictum was borrowed from Keynes. "Better to be approximately right than precisely wrong." Precisely wrong is what most economics and economic forecasting is today. On the other hand, when I hear today’s complaint that forecasting cannot be very accurate and suffers from some intrinsic and unknowable randomness, I remember another sobriquet from Karl Popper (by way of George Soros), "Forecasts and explanations are symmetrical and reversible." I take this to mean if your forecasts are no good, then your explanations are no good. The economic lions of my learning years were at the University of Chicago – followers of Milton Friedman and Robert Lucas and others; Monetarism, Rational Expectations, Efficient Market Theory and so on. This book was not organized as a debate with these schools, but they are inescapable adversaries on the way to clear economic thinking, and others have taken on that job. Those we featured here, of course: John Maynard Keynes, Leon Keyserling, John Kenneth Galbraith, Hyman Minsky, Joseph Stiglitz, James K. Galbraith, George Soros, Steve Keen and Nouriel Roubini. The Neoclassical school is dominant, but there is a vigorous and insightful minority pointing out the error. Perhaps it was my experience in the real world, where I had a list of jobs from cabs, to restaurants, to mines, to forestry, to municipal government that made me aware that these theories did not flower in the places people made their livings, but only in the hothouses of Wall Street and sponsored endowments. It is my firm belief that many if not most students found academic economics equally invalid, or at a minimum, dreadfully uninteresting.

Every summer as kids, we would host one group of cousins or another and jump off hay bales, create mazes by crawling the patterns through the tall grass, and steal green apples out of the garden. We also branded calves, killed chickens, and stole steak knives to threaten skunks with. But that's growing up on a farm for you. Now I write fantasy, science fiction, and horror--and most of it comes from the worlds that I created as a farm kid, one way or another. As a child I grew up in Wyoming, Michigan the eldest child of 2 sisters and 2 brothers, (including another half brother). At around the age of 15 I was forced to take control as head of the household when my parents divorced, more or less forcing me to take on the responsibility of raising my sister Laura (my sister Alisha, the youngest of the two going with my mother) and my brother Eric as well as taking care of my father in the months that followed after his health diminished. At the age of 16 I was forced to quit high school, and sought employment to help take care of my father and his continued health issues, though by then my mother had won custody of all my sibblings. In January 1998, my father passed away after taking a fall a few days after christmas, at that time, with how my life was going and my outlook on things (Way Emo) i was hoping for his death as it was the only way at that time that i felt my life would have a purpose or meaning, i was starting to hate all my friends and family members who had gone on to college, found lovers, and started having famlies of their own, while my life was a constant rut. In the end he passed away and I went to live with my maternal grandparents, who taught be a lot about the real world, life, love, and family. In 2000 after the passing of both my grandparents, I went back to school and received my GED. In 2004, thanks to the assistance of a pastor (John Collins), I was able to go to college and major in pre-law. While at college I took on several other areas of study to include, diversity in society, psychology, philosophy, sociology, history and humanities. These classes helped me in understanding a lot about my full potential as well as the world around me. In 2005 I became a volunteer for CASA (court Appointed Special Advocates) for abused and Negelcted children, and did this until late 2009 when my own health issues began to interfer with my daily life. Having no insurance because of a cheap employer (Advance Securtiy) i either ignored my health issues or went to free clinics which were able to extend things. In December of 2010 thanks to the New Health Care Act i was able to obtain health insurace, only to find out a few months ago that i have NASH, more or less known as Non-Alcoholic Liver Issues, and that i now have 5 - 15 years before i will need a liver transplant, that is of course if i can get my other health issues in check before that time. Writing Motivation: What motivates me to write is my ability to always think and see things from outside of the box... in fact for me there is no box, I just have an odd way of looking at things. Or as some of my professors said in college, "I live in a constant state of parinoia." which i agree is true. Genres: Currently my most recent work is in the genre of historical fiction (Titanic: Echo of the Dying Confession) My reasons for writing about the Titanic as an historical fiction derived from an idea that my grandfather had about the titanic being sunk on purpose. Following this idea I created the novel which shows the possibility of this notion as well as digs deeper into the heart of mans vengeance and the wrath of God. Add to this a book i just came out with called "The heat of Passion Doctrine: Kill your Spouse and Get Away with Murder" and one can see that obscured world i live in... Future works: I am also working on 2 other novels at the moment, one titled "Reasons to be Missed" that deals with a young girl dealing with the troubles in her life (cancer and love life issues). Bernhard Bley - OPS Bley, aachen - Bernhard Bley (Germany) This book is a result of more than thirty years professional experience, including at least twenty years activity in human resource and organisational development. Especially I would like to sincerely thank my wife Erika - the best that ever happened to me - and all the people for their cooperative work and teamwork, who took my help in the form of - job-application & career coach, - executive, senior-, master & head coach, - supervisor, - personnel consultant & developer, - organisational consultant & developer, - seminar facilitator, - trainer and - lecturer. Many of them asked me to write a book like this for those, who didn‘t and don‘t have the opportunity for an application coaching or to participate in a job-application workshop or seminar. Therefore this book is particularly an issue of a longtime cooperation with executives and employees in companies, organisations and local administrative units, clients of coaching and psychological supervision. To all of them I wish to express my sincere thanks!
