Night of the Hyena | by Mac MacCarter May 24, 2012 | $2.99 | 56704 words | Sample 20% |
| An American family survives back to back world pandemics, travels to distant lands and crusades to form a sane society. However, wherever they go, there skulks the most devastating enemy of all. | |||||
| Author bio: Mac is an anachronism, a scientist that has worked and studied in many different fields. Few modern scientists outside movies and comic books actually do so, and it is rarely a rout to riches. However, he finds that his career has been a joy. He has taught and was the first Dean of Research and Extension in a, then tiny, Micronesian Community college. He was an ecologist for the Philippine National Oil Company where he and his colleagues attempted to protect rainforests from illegal loggers, pursued innovative reforestation methods, on geothermal steam drilling reservations and assured some of the cleanest rivers in the country. Contrary to stereotypes of ecological standards burdening enterprise, both the PNOC and small farmers profited, even in the relatively short run. He was principal investigator for biological control of weeds in New Zealand where he mentored a large number of unemployed youngsters, all of which have succeeded, some spectacularly. Also in NZ he was co-project leader of a coastal marine monitoring project and developed statistical methods for monitoring high energy beaches. He has represented a Native American tribe on anadromous fish issues, and informally, family business commercial fishing (particularly hook and line as contrasted with nets and huge fishing ships). He has taught botany general biology, microbiology, mathematics, vocational agriculture, and statistics. His completed degrees include a masters in MAg in Agronomy(crop ecology), a MPH in Industrial Hygiene, and a PhD in Entomology. He and his son briefly manufactured technical and custom gaming computers. He has published various scientific papers. He currently has two science fictions (in the true sense of SF, no magic and no ESP) and a book on research techniques on the way. His futuristic book Day of the Hyena is already uploaded on Smashwords. |

| Author bio: My name is Laura Regan and I write under the name L. M. Quinpool, author of two series - Children Of the Amulet and Calendrial. I'm descended from two very artistic families which include writers, actors, musicians and graphic artists. I write under the name Quinpool because my great great uncle John Regan wrote under the name John Quinpool, author of "First Things In Acadia". Re-using the name gave my grandfather and his siblings great joy and I'm proud to carry the name on. My first series Children Of the Amulet has three books already published in paperback through Ottawa publisher Baico Publishing. I hope to have my fourth book in the series I hope to put into paperback soon but for now it'll only be available with the other three on e-book. There are more already written in the series but they just aren't up to my personal standards and therefore not ready for print or digital books. My second, more Canadian series, Calendrial will be soon made available through e-book only until such time as it's possible to publish in print. In everyday life I'm a Linguist and psychology major. I'm also a web designer, music lover, photographer, and graphic designer. I enjoy working with children of all ages, sizes and abilities and helping them reach their fullest potential despite "lables" or "social roadblocks" they may be faced with. I write about children because I believe they are an important of the past present and future. I believe it is imporant to encourage them to shoot for the stars and I hope my books will empower them with the strength to change the world. For this reason my cousin Sarah Jaworski (now age 19) creates my cover designs of the Calendrial series and she and her brother Christopher (then 12 and 14) co-designed the first 3 Children Of the Amulet books. I very much hope you like my books and will pass the name Quinpool on to your family, friends and associates. Thanks to Smashwords and Baico Publishing for making my publishing dreams come true. As if this and the idea of never seeing his family again aren’t enough, Mark also has to free the Goddess Lazaria, imprisoned on her ice-bound moon by the wizard who cast the infertility spell. | |||||
| Author bio: Laraine Anne Barker has always enjoyed telling stories. As a child, when playing with dolls with her younger sisters became boring, she would make up stories featuring the dolls. She also remembers how she and her sisters wrote stories into exercise books and even illustrated them, using crayons to colour them because they found that rubbing on the crayon pictures gave them a shine similar to that of glossy colour pictures in magazines. Laraine submitted her first book (for adults) to a publisher at about the age of 21 and received a very kind rejection letter in which the editor suggested the story could be rewritten for young readers. She regrets she didn't keep the rejection and follow up on the advice. She didn't start writing fantasy for young children until 1986. After many rewritings the book started then became The Obsidian Quest. |

| Author bio: I write for kids. I write for cooks. I have 50 published books out. 11 of them won awards. I had an adventurous, feisty, interesting marriage for 23 largely happy years. My husband, Ned, went out bicycling one day, got hit by a car and died. I garden. I blog. I cook. I live in Vermont. Used to live in Arkansas. Before that, New York. These days I hang out a lot with my very old mother, Charlotte Zolotow, a famous children’s book writer. Also her cat, Tumbleweed. My late father, Maurice Zolotow, was Marilyn Monroe’s first biographer. Yes, it’s my real name. I think anxiety, procrastination and discomfort are powerful creative forces in disguise. I think that apparent obstacles are building materials. That writing practices and principles spill over, cornucopia-like: from writing to life. I teach writing. I teach people how to befriend uncertainty and fear through writing and thereby reclaim their creative powers of self-love and reinvention. And become better writers. I think we’re all part of the narrative life tells itself about itself. No wonder we all have something to say. |

In the final bloody conflict between wereleopard and hyena, which side will he choose? | |||||
| Author bio: Jeanette Battista graduated with an English degree with a concentration in medieval literature which explains her possibly unhealthy fixation on edged weapons and cathedral architecture. She spent a summer in England and Scotland studying the historical King Arthur, which did nothing to curb her obsession. To satisfy her adrenaline cravings—since sword fighting is not widely accepted in these modern times—she rode a motorcycle at ridiculously high speeds, got some tattoos, and took kickboxing and boxing classes. She gave up the bike when her daughter came along, although she still gets pummeled at the gym on a regular basis. When she’s not writing or working, Jeanette spends time with family, hikes, reads, makes decadent brownies, buys killer boots, and plays Pocket Frogs. She wishes there were more hours in the day so she could actually do more of these things. She lives with her daughter and their ancient, ill-tempered cat in North Carolina. |
