Night of the Hyena by Mac MacCarter Night of the Hyena by Mac MacCarter May 24, 2012 $2.99 56704 words Sample 20%
An American family survives back to back world pandemics, travels to distant lands and crusades to form a sane society. However, wherever they go, there skulks the most devastating enemy of all.
Author bio:
Mac is an anachronism, a scientist that has worked and studied in many different fields. Few modern scientists outside movies and comic books actually do so, and it is rarely a rout to riches. However, he finds that his career has been a joy. He has taught and was the first Dean of Research and Extension in a, then tiny, Micronesian Community college. He was an ecologist for the Philippine National Oil Company where he and his colleagues attempted to protect rainforests from illegal loggers, pursued innovative reforestation methods, on geothermal steam drilling reservations and assured some of the cleanest rivers in the country. Contrary to stereotypes of ecological standards burdening enterprise, both the PNOC and small farmers profited, even in the relatively short run. He was principal investigator for biological control of weeds in New Zealand where he mentored a large number of unemployed youngsters, all of which have succeeded, some spectacularly. Also in NZ he was co-project leader of a coastal marine monitoring project and developed statistical methods for monitoring high energy beaches. He has represented a Native American tribe on anadromous fish issues, and informally, family business commercial fishing (particularly hook and line as contrasted with nets and huge fishing ships). He has taught botany general biology, microbiology, mathematics, vocational agriculture, and statistics. His completed degrees include a masters in MAg in Agronomy(crop ecology), a MPH in Industrial Hygiene, and a PhD in Entomology. He and his son briefly manufactured technical and custom gaming computers. He has published various scientific papers. He currently has two science fictions (in the true sense of SF, no magic and no ESP) and a book on research techniques on the way. His futuristic book Day of the Hyena is already uploaded on Smashwords.

Wild Salvation by Gary Pages Wild Salvation by Gary Pages May 24, 2012 $4.95 100280 words Sample 50%
For several days in a row it was just a typical, run-of-the-mill backpacking trip; exploring, fishing, foraging, building fires. Then one evening something happened that would forever change his life! Not only did it affect how he was feeling at that moment, but it reached back into his past and sent ripples into his future.
Author bio:
Gary spent his childhood running barefoot through the woods of Virginia, and despite being born in New York (Long Island), the dogwoods, maples, and oak trees, which populated the forests of Lynchburg, represent the “roots of his life” and in his heart, it is home. Like a lot of boys who grew-up in a semi-rural area back in the 60’s and early 70’s, Gary’s formative years were filled with animals, sports, motorcycles and causing trouble, with the latter to diminish with maturity. At 15 his family moved to California, but the unfamiliar, and less than convenient geography, made it difficult for him to indulge in his usual pastimes. In adapting to the west-coast life style, he was forced to pursue other activities; things like in-line skating, snow skiing and “partying”, with the latter to diminish with maturity. At 29 Gary found himself longing for “virgin forest”, and, the changing of the seasons, so he packed up his possessions, which of course included his yearling wolf-dog (Cheylo), and headed north to Oregon. For the next 17 years, Gary and his would-be wolves explored all The Great Pacific Northwest had to offer, indulging in such pursuits as mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking and inventing (He has 2 U.S. Patents). Most recently Gary is living back in California, but once again he finds himself yearning for the woods, and the seasonal changes that are part of life in the northern latitudes.

London - 1892. The Prince of Wales wants to get his leg over another man's wife, Charlie Chaplin's mum has gone walkabout, and there's a gang of assassins on the Royal Train. It's up to Mr. Fowler, the engine driver, to sort things out - with young Charlie lending a hand. "A Victorian railway caper in a snowstorm, gripping, ruthless and very funny. An absolutely brilliant book, fantastic fun."
Author bio:
Ian was for many years a ship’s chandler, part of the fourth generation in his family business, supplying merchant vessels around the United Kingdom and north west Europe. Deciding that too much of his time was spent in travelling, and looking for a job which allowed more time for a home life, he set up a local business of his own; a registered firearms dealership. However, although still fun, the gun shop has turned into a much busier operation than originally envisaged, and is now run by son Mike, with Ian relegated to the role of general dogsbody. He is also a commercially qualified pilot on medium sized twin engined aircraft. Ian and his wife Margaret, another pilot, live in Cheshire, they have three grown up children and, so far, two grandchildren. For many years writing has been his hobby, resulting in about one book a year, although never with any thought of being published. It was only after taking part in a British Arts Council literary criticism website that his books found their way into print.

Red, White and Retirement Blues by Richard Alan Dickson Red, White and Retirement Blues by Richard Alan Dickson May 22, 2012 $2.99 12054 words Sample 15%
Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. After sighting a reportedly-dead terrorist, retired agent Roger Turner crashes through the Oakland spaceport security gates in pursuit. He doesn't know how the man survived or why no one spotted him, but refuses to let the man escape again--even with every spaceport security agent chasing after Roger, instead. (Includes the bonus story, "The Eidolon Offramp")
Author bio:
Richard Alan Dickson's writings range from the traditional science fiction, like "G-Blade" and "Gateway: Left Behind," to the more whimsical "Love, Venusian Style" and the Cat Patrol Delta series. He also writes stories for young adults, with titles like "Mister Majestor's Magnificent Menagerie" and "Diver Down!" The kids and the young-at-heart are represented, too, with stories such as "The Last Great Case of the Sunny Hills Detective Agency" and the short, "Hank the Happy Snowman." Before becoming a full-time fiction writer, Richard spent twenty years in the business world. After a hungry stint as a fresh-faced stockbroker, he set aside the glamour of Wall Street—along with the thousands of friends he’d made during dinner-hour cold calls—to work as an accounting assistant in the Seattle office of a reinsurance company (yeah, he had to look that word up in the dictionary, too). Once on the corporate ladder, Richard proved that his years spent climbing trees hadn’t been a complete waste of time by quickly climbing to department manager. But corporate winds are no less predictable than any other wind, and climbing in the wind is seldom a good idea. He suddenly found himself on the wrong side of the country when his company was forced to relocate ten years later. They regrouped in New England. He remained in the Northwest. Waving good-bye to the moving vans as they motored down the road, Richard carefully considered his next career. He became a corporate consultant and ran himself happily ragged for the next nine years, traveling the country and racking up more frequent flyer miles than even a CPA could conveniently count. Richard’s final years in Corporate America were spent in a Fortune 500 insurance group. As a VP, Controller, and then an acting CFO, he traveled from one coast to the other putting the lessons he’d learned as a consultant to good use. His current career as a fiction writer takes him much further than any jetliner ever could, and he seldom needs to leave his writing loft to get there. I came out of my shell so to speak and stories just seemed to pop out of my head. At first I didn't write anything down but was toying with a story one day and my wife saw it and encouraged me to finish it. I've since published works of fiction and 3 technical manuals on Heating & Air conditioning.

"These are all films I still hark back to when I need inspiration," he says, "although people like Duncan Jones, Christopher Nolan and Joss Whedon are modern filmmakers who have given me a lot of inspiration lately." Antony's first successes came with short fiction, placing in many competitions and publishing a number of stories online and in print. After a few years of promotions in a largely unfulfilling job, Antony went part time and completed a degree in creative writing, where he says he "Discovered that screenwriting was where my heart really lay." Since then, Antony has gone on to many contest placings, including the Nichol's second round, the top 5% of the UK's most prestigious TV scriptwriting contest, and to the semifinals and finals of Amazon Studios with no fewer than four screenplays. Hi all, this is K.D. Nielson, I would like to tell you all about my books. I have been writing and telling stories now for close to 30 years. Unfortunately I have not been able to get my work published by conventional means so I have put all my books on Amazon through Kindel. For those of you without a Kindle you can view the books on a Kindle reader for pc. I am a 50 year old American now living in New Zealand since I immigrated in 1985. I originally came here in 1979 with the US Navy as part of Operation Deep Freeze. I spent seven years in the navy and did seven deployments to Antarctica. I have drawn on my navy time and experiences on the ice for some of my stories. Since the earthquakes here in Christchurch I have been unable to find a job with all the thousands of people made unemployed when the hundreds of buildings in our city were destroyed. During this time I have been able to spend much more time on my greatest love, telling stories. I have drawn on my experiences from the months of frightening earthquakes, and used it as material for an authentic storyline in one of my books. Currently, I have not been able to find a publisher, but I have a wealth of intrigue, love, betrayal, war and heroic deeds just waiting for an avid reader. I have finished several stories in one series and others in the world I have created. All these are just waiting to be sent to an interested publisher. I am married to a lovely English woman, a schoolteacher and we have three sons. My wife has donated hours of her valuable time helping me with editing and reading manuscripts, and being very patient. I have also been working with a like-minded friend who is a fantasy fan and a very good writer in her own right. She has been helping me with extensive editing and rewriting. She is also a renowned artist and in another project connected to my books, she is working on sketches of the characters and creatures of my world.

Author bio:
I began writing Light & Dark during my years as a graduate student at Ball State University under the major of Counseling Psychology. What began as a simple hobby quickly turned into something more as I found a passion for writing. While carrying the schedule of a full-time student as well as working a part-time job, I devoted myself to write at least one page a day. After graduating, I received the opportunity to begin practicing psychology as a counselor at a local private practice. My devotion to my writing did not waver. Working a full time schedule and maintaining a full complement of clients, I maintained my dedication. A year or so later, I completed the rough draft of Light & Dark and began the editing process, and a process it was. Writing this novel has proven to be a dramatic learning experience, and I am sure that I still have much more to learn. I look forward to this opportunity as I continue to grow as a writer and inspire, you the reader, to join me on this journey.

Three stories from the early years of Roy Harper, before he became a well known traveler and philosopher. Outlaw Trail covers his time in Texas as a child, Hoosier Dreams his adolescence in Indiana and The Gangster's Apprentice chronicles Roy's coming of age. These were the formative experiences that shaped his worldview and made him what he was to be.

He is old enough to have had a draft lottery number (he chose not to go), and young enough to remember what it was in seventy-two, (fourteen). An avid reader since he learned how, he was inspired at an early age by Kerouac’s classic “On the Road”, and chose to emulate Dean Moriarity’s madness. The following forty-some years have been an unending parade of new locations, new job titles and new wives. In the early eighties he sold all his belongings and moved to Belize, where he pursued a Gilligan life-style with the intention of staying forever. The attorney general had other ideas, so he returned to California. He ran unsuccessfully for President against Ronald Reagan while living in Texas, and taught at a tech school in Tennessee. A long, long time ago; legends and folk tales were used by people as a way of captivating the imagination of children and adults alike. Elders would use stories in order to impart the ways of the community, wisdom and morals to the rest and thereby also fostering a strong community spirit. I have always been fascinated by mythology and being born in Kenya, the connection to Africa has also been strong. Africa is a melting pot of thousands of different communities with their own specific cultures, traditions and stories! However most of these stories were never written and over time communities have started to lose their stories. I came to Cape Town, South Africa on a corporate secondment and the existence of so many different tribes just within South Africa intrigued me. I realised that a lot of the culture and traditions that used to be in existence several years ago, had gradually diminished over time. This project was borne as a result; with the aim of preserving the stories, legends and folk tales of some of the South African cultures through children. It is hoped that these books will help the youth of South Africa to re-connect with their cultures as well as to raise awareness and tolerance of others. Through sales of this book, I hope to raise funding in order to donate printed books to needy children in less privileged schools. Some of these stories have been collected through interacting with the local communities and others through research. Due to the lack of historic documented records as well as evolution and adaptation of some of the stories over time; it is difficult to guarantee the originality and uniqueness of the stories. The stories gathered have been further adapted to make them more captivating for today’s children.

His cancer terminal and morphine the only relief, he accepts the certainty of death. But then it's all changed - he's awake when he should be dead - and in a place he's never seen before. Stranded in a world untouched by civilisation. - 'They were either going to install me as the Arch Druid or they had something of a sacrificial nature in mind - perhaps I should tell them that I wasn't a virgin."

Matthew Benner's from the east coast somewhere. I'm thinkin' Maine but that's prolly cause I'm confusin' him with Stephen King. Pretty sure he lives near a West Chester but google maps showed a helluva lot of West Chesters so that piece of information proved not-helpful. If I had to guess, I'd say... West Chester, Illinois... but I'm basing that on nothing. In fact, Illinois might have been one of the states without a West Chester. He has children, too. Several of them. Matthew Benner, not Stephen King. (Though Stephen King has kids, too. I think. Did you know he got hit by a car a few years back? Poor guy...) And he's a massage therapist. And a bartender. And an avionics technician. He might be a Goddamn superhero at this point.

I wrote my first award-winning story in 4th Grade, titled “The human bean.” It wasn’t a play on words. Intending to write a profound piece about the human condition, it turns out I wrote a mutant story about a human/legume crossbreed. (Curse you, phonics!) Now I write from the unique perspective of being born and raised on a cattle ranch in Texas while attending University in Missoula, Montana, thus spawning the world’s most self-proclaimed redneck granola. The years in between haven’t improved my spelling, but they’ve created a hell of a human bean. My first book, Tainted Love: God, Sex and Relationships for the Not-so-pure-at-heart (written from all my soiled experiences) was published in 2002 by InterVarsity Press. After several years of retooling myself as a novelist (by drinking more and making less money) I reemerged in 2009 with the concept for Reeferpunk. My lovely wife and I adopted our first child from Vietnam and recently produced a second boy through more traditional means. When not spinning genius into the aethernet I obsess over home wine making, earthen construction, gardening, social justice, ultimate Frisbee and the promotion of industrial hemp.
