Natural First Aid for Asthma, Allergies, Colds, Coughs, Cuts and More
Home remedies are more than just folklore. They are tried and tested methods that make use of natural disease-fighting properties in common herbs, spices, foods, and other substances to treat minor injuries such as small cuts and scrapes and help to prevent common ailments. However, the ingredients in home remedies are not potent enough to treat infections and chronic or severe illness; a doctor must be seen to make an accurate diagnosis and get treatment. They can also not treat deep cuts or large skin wounds. Seek urgent medical attention if you have a serious injury.
Asthma
If your asthma is under control you can prevent and treat a minor asthma attack or occasional wheezing with a cup of coffee (thought not the decaf kind). The caffeine in coffee acts as a natural bronchial muscle relaxer to help open up your lungs and facilitate breathing. However, this remedy cannot replace any prescribed medications for your asthma; make sure that you take your dosage of medicine exactly as directed by your doctor.
Chicken broth, the universal remedy for coughs, colds and flus, is also good for asthma. Chicken soup, vegetable soup, and other fluids help to thin bronchial mucus and soothe inflammation in the lungs.
Allergies
Inhaling pollen, dust, and animal fur and dander in the air can trigger hay fever and seasonal allergies. To stop the passage of these allergens into the nasal cavity, gently apply petroleum jelly to the inside rim of each nostril. The thick petroleum jelly catches the allergen particles before it can enter the body where it triggers an allergic reaction.
