Earlier this year a writer wanted to publish a surfer lifestyle magazine. He envisioned a publication that would convey the satisfaction of living by the beach and riding wave crests daily on a long, narrow streamlined board. During the heyday of print magazines, he would have had to drum up start-up costs before he could pursue his dream.

Instead he approached Mark Edmiston, CEO of Nomad Editions and sold him on the digital version of his idea. Six weeks later and as many publications later, the two discovered there wasn’t an audience for a weekly magazine for all things surfboard.

Today Edmiston shrugs Wavelines off as a gamble that set him back a few thousand dollars, an expense Nomad has since absorbed because launch costs was relatively low. It’s not a big deal, particularly since February 2011, he has launched six weekly successful digital publications and he’s eager to add more to the portfolio. He’s not the only digital publishing executive with that mindset. With the huge popularity of the iPad and other dlgital reading devices, it’s a great time to be a writer with an idea for a magazine.
