Introduction

I gave the family television away in 2009. It had been collecting dust for several years and I was tired of keeping up with appearances. Visitors to my home ask what we use instead of a television and some cannot comprehend that we successfully use our computers to watch anything we desire.

My sister was a dedicated television user until I taught her the tricks in this book. I'm not sure if she even owns a television anymore. She spends her days going from website to website watching whatever catches her interest, spreading the word among her friends.

My youngest hates cable television now. She says she prefers watching things that she can't find on TV and doesn't like having to keep track of viewing schedules.

My middle daughter came over today to watch the latest "Twilight" because she couldn't afford to go visit a theater. She called her friends to brag because none of them could afford to watch it either and tried to explain how it was done.

My neighbors now talk about selling their televisions because they no longer use them. My ex is now picking the brains of our kids to try and learn our secret.

I love spreading the word about this wonderful resource but I've grown a bit tired of teaching everyone individually. Instead of reaching a few people in my circle I would like to teach more and work less.

I would also like to warn about some of the hazards of watching stuff online. They are easy to avoid if you know what to look for. They can bring a lot of grief if you do not.

I started using these methods 10 years ago when online viewing was in its infancy and the selection was very limited. Now it has become a huge shadow industry occupied by entrepreneur and scam artist alike. While some sites are legitimate others are just a step ahead of the law, skipping out ahead of takedown orders and starting over when the Government gets involved.

This book is designed to teach you how to thrive in the wilderness. You can save lots of money every month using a computer and a high-speed internet connection. It can also open your world to the incredible variety of videos, movies and television shows that are available for free online.

If I can teach one person how to save money by watching stuff online then I am content. If one person decides to eliminate their television in favor of a computer I will be delighted.

For the record I am not an anarchist; I do believe that artists should be paid. I do not believe in paying $30, $50 or more a month for a service that feeds me commercials on a constant basis and encourages my children to harangue me into buying yet another thing that we cannot afford.

Consider this: Cable companies charge advertisers to show ads on their channels. We then pay to watch the ads that they have already been paid to display. These cable companies are making money on both ends of the deal. It is like the bank that charges you for the right to store your money in the vault, only to make more money as it lends your money out to other people.

I have an issue with that.

If you are supported by advertising then do not charge the customer. It is not an impossible request. Companies like Bazooka Magazine (http://bazookamagazine.com/ ) manage to do just that and give their ad-supported items away for free. In the early days of television the stations and studios did the same.

So pull up a chair and grab the keyboard. The time has come to discover the smorgasbord of videos available for free online.
