1 WHY START A CLEANING BUSINESS?

If you're looking to go into business for yourself, start by asking yourself what you want to get out of your enterprise. Richard Sparacio, President and co-founder of MaidPro Franchising, asked himself something similar back in 1991 when he decided to start a home cleaning company. "Before I even thought about how to start a cleaning service, I asked myself why I should go into the residential cleaning industry. Once I answered that for myself, I knew I would be poised with the confidence I needed to start the best house cleaning business out there."

So, what did Sparacio come up with? The simple answer is that home cleaning offered a recurring business model with payment at the time of service. But, time and experience showed that there were many other benefits to choosing this industry. "In other industries, owners may experience the busiest day of the year on opening day, and are left crossing their fingers that the revenue volume will stick. The expenses for these early days are often the highest, too." Sparacio says. In residential cleaning, a great deal of risk is allayed by building your business a few clients at a time. This steady start allows the owner to master the moving parts of the business, one step at a time. Those are a few great reasons to start a home cleaning company.

Sparacio also wanted to make sure he started a home cleaning business that people would be happy to work for. "Whether you're an employee or a business owner, everyone needs to take a break from work sometimes. I can't imagine owning a business that stays open nights and weekends or worse, holidays." The core hours of operation for a residential cleaning business are early mornings until late afternoons, five days a week. With longer commute times and more travel required for many professional positions, regular working hours is a huge perk in the cleaning industry.

Today, revenues from home cleaning services are still growing at a staggering rate. Gains will be driven by ongoing increases in the number of households and the number of business establishments, as well as the increasing availability and affordability of cleaning services. Changes in demographics will also support increasing home cleaning business revenues as the number of dual income household’s rise and the US population ages. Dual-income families often do not have the time or inclination to perform home cleaning tasks, and the growing number of baby boomers in the US generally has the financial wherewithal to use professional services on a routine basis.

The shift away from "do it yourself" to "do it for me" will persist, especially in the house cleaning market. Whether they're not good at it, they don't have time, or they just plain don't like it, residential cleaning customers want someone else to clean their homes, and there will always be someone there to do it.

So, why start a home cleaning company? In short, it's a great life style business that's affordable to get into...with lots of potential for growth.

Of all home businesses, the cleaning business is an ideal opportunity for several reasons. First, it requires very little upfront money to get started. For roughly two hundred dollar investment for equipment, you can be in business and ready to make money within a week’s time. Secondly, it pays very well. Believe it or not, you can make between thirty and sixty dollars per hour cleaning. Not only that, you can make between fifty and even a hundred dollars an hour cleaning gutters.

If you hire some workers you can make even more, as we will discuss later. You can even set it up your business to run on autopilot mode, as I have done. By lining up all of the work on the telephone and having workers perform the labor for you, you can make a sizeable income and not have to perform any type of manual labor.

Also, there is a huge market for cleaning jobs. Everyone who owns a house or business has windows and nobody wants to clean them by themselves. You will be surprised at the consistent response and the never-ending demand for window cleaning that you will experience one you start your own cleaning business.

Why Start A Cleaning Business?

I had three other friends who did the exact same work and we never encroached on each other’s ability to make a living. Not to mention any other companies in your area, there is always enough work for everyone especially for you since the population is constantly growing and new homes and businesses are being built to serve them.

Lastly, you can make a substantial amount of money. If you work by yourself, you can easily do two or three big window cleaning jobs in one day making 0 to 0 a day. I suggest finding one worker to help you get through more jobs per day.

If you have one helper, you can get through five to six big jobs and make 0 to 00 while paying your worker or even an hour, leaving your window cleaning business with a very nice profit margin and more importantly, lightening your workload by cutting it almost in half. If you are a hard-worker you can make even more. If you are not big on physical labor you could still make 0 a day cleaning windows without breaking a sweat.

Naming your business: You are going to have to decide on a

name for your new business. I highly recommend it state

something regarding your new business and the services you

offer. This way it will be easy for the clients to remember your company, thus increasing the amount of work you will get from them.

If you have not gotten your business license, your employer

identification number, or set up your business type (sole

proprietor, partnership, C Corporation, LLC, or S Corporation).

Some businesses can be formed and started within 3 business

days or less.

General Liability Insurance: Next, you are going to want to

start receiving quotes for general liability insurance and

worker’s compensation insurance to decide which company

will offer you the best insurance for the best price. You will

need worker’s compensation insurance if you will be having

employees also, if you are having family members work with

you in your business-generally you do need workman’s

compensation insurance. Check with your local state

regarding their specific rules. Generally, some clients require a

$1,000,000 policy, this is the standard.
