Let’s begin with what Ayn Rand considered the ideal man.
In 1928 Rand wrote her journal, in it there is a passage that calls out for attention, "What is good for me is right," this quote was not written by Rand, it was credited to the infamous mass murderer of the day, William Edward Hickman. In response to his motto in life and his personal philosophy she wrote "The best and strongest expression of a real man's psychology I have heard," Finally, it would seem Ayn found a real man could zealously worship.
William Edward Hickman was the most notorious American of the late 1920’s.
In 1927 Hickman was 19 years old. In December of that year, he went to a Los Angeles public school and convinced the school to release a 12 year old girl named Marian Parker to his care. Once Hickman kidnapped Marian, he sent Mr. and Mrs. Parker multiple ransom notes. The letters were unusually crewel and sadistic- it would seem this kidnapper wasn’t just in it for money; he seemed to enjoy taunting the parents.
Hickman demanded the sum of $1,500 for the child's safe release. The father was able to raise the money to deliver to William. "At the rendezvous, Mr. Parker handed over the money to a young man who was waiting for him in a parked car. When Mr. Parker paid the ransom, he could see his daughter, Marion, sitting in the passenger seat next to the suspect. As soon as the money was exchanged, the suspect drove off with the victim still in the car. At the end of the street, Marion's corpse was dumped onto the pavement. She was dead. (We need to shed a little more detail on Hickman’s carnage, before we do a warning: For the squeamish, or the highly empathetic you may want to skip this part.) Her legs had been chopped off and her eyes had been wired open to appear as if she was still alive. Her internal organs had been cut out and pieces of her body were later found strewn all over the Los Angeles area."
The atrocities Hickman perpetrated on the child were grotesque and unforgiving. Before he killed her, there was speculation that he molested the girl, but without advanced forensics the evidence for this was never acquired and the claims were never conclusively proven.
Rand was an enthusiastic fan of the child murderer and mutilator.
After the tragic events of the Parker murder, Rand was preparing a novel titled “The Little Street” the books hero, whose name was to be (Renahan) was based on none other than Hickman. In a subsequent journal entry she writes of Renahan, "is born with a wonderful, free, light consciousness -- resulting from the absolute lack of social instinct or herd feeling. He does not understand, because he has no organ for understanding, the necessity, meaning, or importance of other people ... Other people do not exist for him and he does not understand why they should."
Nothing that Hickman did seemed to bother Ayn Rand very much as he became her idolized “real man" in her worldview, this man was worthy of or praise and emulation.
The reason all of this matters is- the modern day Republican Party espouses her free market ideology no matter the costs, and it embraces her view of extreme selfishness as an admirable attribute wholeheartedly.
Congressman Paul Ryan forces his staffers to read Rand before and after he hires them. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he is the man that is trying to dismantle the social safety net in America. Congressman Ron Paul was such a fan of Rand’s that he named his son after her name sake- Senator Rand Paul. If there is one thing these men and other tea party members have in common, it is a total disdain for the poor. It can also be said that while the Randians worship the rich, they are actively working on destroying the middle class by building an oligarchy.
It’s clear to see that Ayn Rand admired Hickman with great reverence. If this vile creature was her ideal man, the basis upon which her philosophy is based; I leave it up to you to draw your own conclusions on what her ardent followers admire the most about her warped dogma, and what “Going Galt” truly means.
