CHAPTER ONE – Meet the rooftop club

My name is Derek Johnson and I’m a fourth grader at Paul Robeson Elementary School. I transferred from Malcolm X Elementary School last year. My mom changed jobs, and she wanted me to go to the same school with my cousins.

This meant my Aunt Didi had to watch us after school. This was cool because me and my cousins could hang out together all the time. I also knew that I could spend the night at my aunt Didi’s house, so most days I could hang tight with my cousins before and after school in case somebody wanted to try and jump us.

I wasn’t afraid to defend myself, but being confronted and beat up by a crew of people just wasn’t going down. Getting jumped was something that I had to worry about everyday growing up in the city. This was the world we lived in, so you learned to roll with the punches.

My first day at Paul Robeson was cool. I liked my new teacher Mrs. Wong even though she was tough. I made a few friends, and I even survived eating what they called food from the cafeteria. I shook my head when Mrs. Wong assigned homework. Did we really need homework on the first day of school? I guess she thought so, and so I just rolled with the punches.

After the first day of school was over, I was walking home when a crew of kids started following me. My cousins Sheila, Lulu, and Domanique saw what was happening, so they yelled, “Hey Derek! Wait for us!”

When the crew of kids saw my cousins, they turned around and walked away. My cousins caught up with me and told me all about the crew of kids that followed me. They told me that Paul Robeson, our school, is divided into four different groups.

There’s The Crew, the kindergarteners who no one bothered, everyone else who was bullied by The Crew, and then there was us, The Rooftop Club.
