Advanced Querying

1: What are joins?

Answer:

Joins extend and describe relationships in Access by specifying the details of the relationship between two tables. A relationship is usually a link between two common fields in the tables. In one of the tables, the field is known as the primary key and in the other table, it is known as the foreign key.

2: In one-to-many relationships, how do you choose the primary and the foreign key?

Answer:

The primary key is in the “one” table and the foreign key is in the “many” table.

3: When does Access automatically define joins for tables?

Answer:

It automatically defines joins when the relationship between the tables is already defined.

4: What are the four main types of joins?

Answer:

Inner join, outer join, cross join and unequal join

5: What is the difference between an inner join and an outer join?

Answer:

An inner join returns matching values from both tables, whereas outer join requires only one or neither of the tables to have matching values.

6: What are the types of outer join?

Answer:

Full outer join, left outer join and right outer join

7: If you drag a field from table A to a field from table B when describing a relationship in design view, which table will be considered the “left” field?

Answer:

Table A

8: What does a right outer join do?

Answer:

It retrieves matching records from the “left” table and all records from the “right” table.

9: What does a left outer join do?

Answer:

It includes matching records from the “right” table and all records from the “left” table and then returns that resultset.

10: What does a full outer join do?

Answer:

It includes all the records from both the left and the right tables and then returns that resultset.

11: What does an inner join do?

Answer:

It retrieves all the records that match from both the left and the right tables.
