Heart/Break

Laying quietly in bed were two elderly lovers, “Margaret” and

“Marvin” Bradshaw.

Asleep without a concern in the World.

Then suddenly, a heart attack emerged on Margaret, causing her to scream a horrifically.

The scream woke up her husband Marvin.

Margaret grabbed the cloth on her nightgown as her head rose and mouth open in pain.

Marvin repeated to ask “what’s wrong Darling? What’s wrong?”

She couldn’t answer.

Marvin scooted his hips to the side of the bed putting himself inside his own wheelchair set next to his bed.

He took another glance at his wife in pain, then begun to wheel himself to the restroom.

Marvin searched for his wife’s heart medication. He found it in the medicine cabinet.

He couldn’t reach the pills that were high on the top shelf.

“Hang on there honey, I almost got them!” He screamed.

Meanwhile, Margaret being fearful got up and out of her bed looking for water.

She was very disoriented and begun walking half witted through the pain.

In front of her, rested a flight of stairs that she got dangerously closer to.

“I got them!” said Marvin while he finally got was able to grab the medication bottle.

He raced to the room to help Margaret but she was no longer in the room.

“Margaret?” Marvin said as he worried even more.

He rushed towards the bedroom door noticing it was open.

He looked around screaming “Margaret!”

He wheeled closer to the stairs noticing his wife laying down unconscious as if she fell down the flight of stairs.

Her head was splattered with blood, one of her arms appeared broken.

Marvin cried.

He begun to wheel himself away from the stairs, then back into the room.

He took some time to compose himself, picking up a telephone to call nine one one.

Survived

Margaret survived, though she had a concussion. She lived through her heart attack. Marvin sat on his wheelchair besides her holding her hand.

While he held her hand Marvin overheard a few Dr's.

They were discussing how they should put Marvin and Margaret in a Residential home.

“What do you suppose the best option is for people of their age? I mean, it will be

irresponsible for us to let them go back home in the state they are in. The guy is damn near half ways crippled and the wife, well, she’s gonna’ have to be in a wheelchair from now on as well.” Said Dr. Kujo.

“I agree. It’s not a good situation for anyone to be in I mean it doesn’t even look like

he can keep a good eye on his wife at this point.” responded Dr. Brutus.

“Perhaps there is only one choice at this point.” Said Dr. Kujo.

“Nursing Home?" Responded Dr. Brutus.

“We ain’t going to no home, so you might as well just forget it.” Interrupted Marvin from the other side of the room.

Still holding on to his wife’s fingers.

“Sir, we are only looking after your best interests." Said Dr. Brutus.

“I know what it looks like. You see two old people and you think we can’t protect

ourselves. Keep ourselves out of danger. You think we are useless.” said Marvin.

“Sir. . . We are thinking it will be a lot

easier for the both of you if you had someone to watch after you. that's all. That way you

don’t have to worry about her anymore.” said Dr. Kujo while he walked closer to Marvin.

“She’s my wife! of course I’m going to worry about her!” screamed Marvin!

“Ok. . . ok, I understand. Like we said, all we are trying to do is make things easier for you. That’s all” said Dr. Kujo.

“We really are looking out for your best interest.” added Dr. Kujo.

“Are there any other alternatives? We made a pact along time ago. . . That we didn’t

need anyone to help us. We are together forever, through sickness and health. Sometimes I’m beginning to think we are the only two in the world still trying to keep that promise.” Said Marvin while he gripped onto Margaret’s hand tighter.

Dr. Brutus looked around the room as he thought. He told Marvin “There is another

alternative.”

“What?” asked Marvin.

“Well. . . if you have anyone in your family, kids. . . qualified enough to take care of the both of you then the state will pay them for it. More then that, it will keep you guys out of the Residential Home. The only problem is we checked your records and we don’t see any children.” said Dr. Brutus while he rechecked Marvin's paperwork.

“That’s not true, we do have a son.” said Marvin.

The Drs. begun to look through their paper work rapidly.

“He’s away at Stanford, training to be a Dr if you can believe that or not. He's only

been to collage a few years, but I’m sure he can help us. He’s a good son. I know he will do it and he will do a damn good job of it. I know he

will.. Let me ask him?” asked Marvin.

"If he's training to be a Dr, it would be a shame to take him away from that -" said Dr.

Kujo before being interrupted by Marvin saying

"Let me ask him! Please?"

The two Drs. looked at one another.

“Alright, you can ask him. But if this doesn’t work out, we will have to

recommend you guys to a Residential Home. Ok?" asked Dr. Brutus.

Marvin looked at them, then his eyes looked back at Margaret while she laid breathing but unconscious.

Dylan

Inside a dorm room, rested Dylan Bradshaw. The adopted son of Marvin and

Margaret Bradshaw.

The near him rang, he opened his eyes awakening from sleep.

He turned over to look at the phone.

He answered it.

“Hello?” Dylan asked.

“Hello Dylan, it's Marvin your Dad.” said Marvin on the other end.

“Dad! What made you call so early?” asked Dylan glad to hear the sound of his fathers

voice.

“Your Mother had an accident.” said Marvin, clearing his throat.

“What’s wrong?” Dylan asked becoming nervous.

“She’s ok, I assure you. But the Dr. said that because of our physical condition, that we may need someone here to watch after us. I hate to be a burden to you, you know I am

proud of you

and that you have been doing so well out there in Stanford.” said Marvin.

“It’s alright Dad, don’t worry about that. What’s wrong? Are you guys ok?” asked

Dylan.

“Yes we were ok, but we just need someone here to help us. Can you come here to

California?” Said Marvin while becoming very ashamed.

“Yes, of course I’ll be down there. You don’t have to ask me twice. Don’t worry about me I’ll be alright wherever I go. Yes I’ll be down there soon as I can, ok?” responded Dylan.

“Thank you son. Your Mother and I are truly appreciative.” Said Marvin, full of both

gratitude and shame.

“Of course Dad, I’ll be there as soon as possible.” Dylan Responded.

[one and a half days later]

Marvin poured a cup of coffee for Margaret who sat next to him sitting on a wheelchair.

She sat there reading a news paper.

“The damn World will never change, will it?” said Margaret.

“What do you mean darling?” asked Marvin.

“Two students caught selling drugs on campus.” She responded while she pointed out the news article to Marvin.

“It’s not the World that needs to change, it’s us.” responded Marvin.

They both heard a knock on the door.

Marvin became wide-eyed.

“Dylan!” He said very happily.

Marvin wheeled himself to the door.

He unlocked the lock, then begun to open the door.

Standing on the other side was a very tall, very scrappy looking man in glasses with a bag over his shoulder.

“Father!” Dylan said while hugging Marvin.

“Dylan!” screamed Margaret from nearly the other side of the room.

"mom!" screamed Dylan as he walked over to her to hug her as well.

“It’s been such a long time, how are you guys? What happened to you mom?” asked

Dylan.

“Oh nothing, don’t you worry about it. So long as you’re here everything is all better.”

She said while she pinched his cheeks on his face.

“Dylan, come sit with us at the breakfast table.” Said Marvin while wheeling himself to the kitchen.

“If I would have known you were coming today I would have tightened up a little around here.” said Margaret.

“ha ha, no Mom that’s fine, don’t you worry about anything anymore. That’s my job

now.” responded Dylan.

Marvin looked at Dylan and asked “So that means you decided to. . . help us out?”

Dylan looked at both his parents saying “Yes. I decided I have to be here. You guys are my parents and I love you both.”

“Have breakfast with us.” said Marvin.

The Garden

After breakfast Dylan and his parents took the opportunity to catch up on what

they had missed out on with in the last couple of years.

Dylan talked about how well school was going, what he learned and new friends he had met.

Margaret and Marvin talked about how they started a new garden outside.

“A garden?” asked Dylan.

Dylan never knew his parents were green thumbs.

“Yes a garden.” responded Margaret who laughed through her response.

“Wow! I never knew you guys were gardeners” said Dylan.

“Neither did we.” said Marvin as he looked at his wife.

“So what. . . if I may ask. . . are you guys growing?” asked Dylan.

Margaret accidentally dropped a salt shaker that was sitting on the table.

Dylan jumped off his seat rushing to clean up the salt.

“Thank you very much son. I appreciate that.” said Margaret.

“Your mother and I are growing all sorts of things. However our main focus has been

roses, believe it or not.” said Marvin.

“Roses?” Asked Dylan as he finished up cleaning the salt on the table.

“Yes indeed” said Marvin. “Your Mother and I have been growing all types of different colored roses outside.” he added.

“Wow! I just never pictured you to be the rose type of guy.” Dylan said to his father

while he sat back down on a chair.

“Well believe it or not , I never knew that I would be the rose type of guy either. There

was just something about the colors, that just, seem very pleasant. Calming, I suppose.”

Responded Marvin.

“Well that makes sense. Sometimes there’s nothing more beautiful then a sudden rush of calmness, through a hectic situation.” responded Dylan very oddly.

“I agree with that Dylan. Hey did you hear about -” Margaret began to say while she held up the news paper before she was interrupted by Marvin who didn’t want her to show him the story.

“Don’t. . .” said Marvin while he looked at Margaret seriously.

Margaret looked back at Marvin realizing that the reason Marvin didn’t want her to tell Dylan was because it had to do with a collage.

“Would you like to see the garden Dylan?” asked Margaret.

“Of course I would.” he responded.

They walked out the house to the Garden.

Dylan noticed that a few things had changed.

“Wow. Things have changed. . .” said Dylan.

“Oh yes, we weren’t just sitting here feeling sorry for ourselves for the last two years. We were actually starting to make the wonders of our imagination shine.” said Margaret.

“You sure have.” Dylan responded.

While Dylan looked around, he marveled over the scenery and couldn’t believe that his parents had did such a fantastic job decorating the house giving the shape of their health.

“Here it is.” said Marvin as they approached the garden.
