You can establish what sort of premises you require by writing down a list of what you need from your premises. The following is a brief list of things to consider:

Special structural requirements, such as high ceilings

Access and parking space for customers and deliveries

Flexibility options to change or add utilities, e.g. a three-phase electricity power supply

Future expansion potential to meet your long-term needs

Of course, your choice of premises will also depend on affordability and how much you are willing to spend, taking into consideration any costs you may incur in the process of acquiring and setting up the premises:

Purchasing costs, including solicitors’ fees professional fees for surveyors, etc.

Costs of likely alterations, fitting out and decoration

Alteration costs to comply with building, health and safety regulations and fire regulations

Rent fees, service and utility charges (gas, water, electricity)

Business rates, building and contents insurance
