Fragment 1

Our personal growth is individual and ongoing

It was by chance that I happened to meet again my dear friend, Maite, at a workshop at a holistic center, where we found ourselves seated at the same table for a delicious vegetarian buffet. It had been almost a year since we had seen each other the last time, although we have been friends for many years. Maite was obviously excited about something and said that she just had to share with me the most incredible experience that she had had recently.

After finishing our lunch, we went over to an area that suggested a tropical atmosphere with a charming pond surrounded by lush vegetation and a resplendent turf that vitalized the senses with their scents and colors. Feeling ensconced, we sat ourselves down on a little bench underneath the shade of a Bay Laurel tree.

As if she was about to burst, Maite said: I have to start by telling you how one thing kept leading me to another in this incredible journey I began a few months ago. I don't know if I’ll be able to finish explaining everything in this particular moment, but most importantly I want share with you this great transformation that has absolutely changed my life—it has turned me around 180 degrees. Let me begin by telling you about an incredible dream that I had that sparked my curiosity and at the same time motivated me to start investigating about some of the things that had been lying dormant inside of me and that craved to wake up.

In this dream, I was in a park surrounded by enormous, colorful butterflies, and as they were flying around me they felt both real and fantastical to me. They were about three feet in size and crisscrossed in front of me, without touching me, and it felt as if I were watching an aerial spectacle. As I was enjoying their performance--their vibrant colors and the skill that they displayed--I took out my camera and began to capture the moment. I noticed some children playing amongst the butterflies, and I asked them to sit on a bench in a playground area so that I could take a picture of them surrounded by the colors of the butterflies that were flying all around. I awoke from that dream with a sensation of clarity and lightness, but I did not pay too much attention to it, just yet.

After a week later, I had another dream—an extremely vivid one that I have clearly fixed in my memory as if it had been a real and actual experience for me. I found myself in a strange place where I was talking with some people who seemed to have a lot of knowledge about life. Apparently, I was trying to find out what would be the best way to be able to know what I really wanted in my life. There were three or four people, that I remember, that opened some books and explained to me about subjects that I don't quite recall, and then later showed me a few images; among them, I do remember, a beautiful display of nature that showed a forest of glimmering cypresses and pines.

Abruptly, an attendant appeared and said to me, "it’s time to leave now and take the final shuttle back as you have stayed longer than should have been allowed,” and at the same time I thought I heard another voice cry out, “Wait! …just a little more.” The gentleman led me to an enormous gate with two grand doors made of some light blue material that seemed ancient, and they had just closed up before me. I noticed that I didn't have much energy, and it was difficult for me to walk, when just then one door opened a small crack just enough for me to pass through and enter into another area that I just assumed would be the exit. Although I was moving slowly, I could manage to pass through easily, with little help from one of the attendants. A little further on, I could see there was another gateway, but by now I was practically crawling on the ground and time slowed down around me. I could see that ahead I could go in some sort of contraption where they were waiting to transport me. To my surprise, the device seemed to be more like a helicopter, but its rotors were two enormous butterfly wings by their shape and brilliant and colorful designs. At the front of the apparatus was a lady of about eighty years old who I asked if I could please take a seat. She answered, “Whichever you like—you can sit or remain standing. I am here to assist you while you are transported to a very distant place, and, if you are not guided properly, you would not be able to arrive at your destination on your own.”

We flew at a great altitude from where it was possible to make out a wide panorama of nature. In the distance, I could see a great ocean and, along the flight path, there was a strongly flowing river, full of sediment from a recent downpour. The river’s edge was lined with the vibrant greens of the trees and the precious flora between them.

Just then, two gigantic butterflies came into view with their beautiful designs and colorings as they were gliding about our same high altitude. I felt as if we were all flying together in tandem, with the only real difference that I was flying in the contraption that brought me here. One of the butterflies touched the front of the vehicle, but I did not notice any impact or effect, suggesting that we were all part of the same world together.

We were flying for a few minutes before we arrived at some place, and then I was, how—I don't know, suspended in the air just floating and then moved over to a large transportation center. Some people there greeted me and said, “You already have the information that you need; from here you can proceed to your destination by yourself. As the morning’s light is just now beginning, you can make out the coastline in the distance.” Clearly I could see through the mist where the sea ended at a coastline. I could make out a fantastic panorama, punctuated by the shaded silhouettes of the buildings of a city, all still very far from where we were at the moment.

After that strange experience, I woke up, and I realized that I had been asleep in my bed. Several minutes passed before I fully regained my bearing and could get up, since I had felt so extremely immersed in such a seemingly realistic trip. Once I had returned to my normal rate of breathing, I took a pencil and paper and wrote down the complete dream, adding to the previous one, and now I had two astral adventures related to butterflies.

At various points in my life, I have noticed that dreams have brought me important some messages. In spite of the fact that dreams do not occupy a significant place in our culture, I can affirm that they, sometimes, have served as guide to me. Certainly, certain ones will feel undeniably significant to me, and I will always try to grasp their essence.

After these two great revelations, I began to investigate about them. I was sure there was a mystical significance to the butterflies, so, not so surprisingly, I found that they are symbol of metamorphosis and transformation. The butterfly also signifies freedom—to free oneself from the past, and the different cycles or stages of life. I summarized the following information to consider how it would be useful to me. According to scientific research, the butterfly is the only living thing able to completely change its genetic structure through the process of metamorphosis.

The butterfly represents the necessity of change, of greater freedom, and at the same time symbolizes bravery. It takes courage to make the necessary changes in our process of personal growth. The butterfly serves as an example to us that we can also plan for and orchestrate our own transformation by finding the mental clarity to organize our actions and determine what the next steps for our inner growth are.

The different phases in a butterfly's life are the egg, the caterpillar, the chrysalis, and finally the precious butterfly. Each person on their own path can determine in which stages they are in order to understand what would be the next step for them to follow: the egg is the beginning--the birth of some idea or project; the caterpillar is the decision to declare itself to the physical world; the chrysalis has to do with “examination of one's inner self,” either by internal reflection or by the development of a project or idea; the emergence from the chrysalis to become an adult, or butterfly, is the sharing with the world all the splendor of one’s creation.

At that point, I said to myself, “Maite, it’s time to begin that transformation, and it is important to know that there are always more steps to follow and that it requires both patience and perseverance to achieve any change. “

As I was committed to investigating further, I realized that our growth is ongoing, and that I needed to have an open and organized mind if I truly wanted to attain personal growth and discover the ways to enrich myself.

It is essential to begin by paying attention and really knowing ourselves so that we can focus on our objectives and also obtain a better balance and more constructive interaction with our surroundings. From that awareness, we gain a clarity and we know with a certainty and determination in what really we want. Many have described it as if to grow from the inside out.

I began to put together a plan of action in order to take control of my life using these ideas to create my well-being. I decided to create a new vision of me by categorizing all the areas of my life by importance and organizing them in order of priority. I set out to establish my own set of values and principles, keeping only those that were in harmony with myself. And choosing to carry out this change in my life has been one of the greatest decisions that I have ever made!

Then, when it was necessary to begin working on my goal, I did not become anxious about achieving it, but to the contrary, I was always absolutely convinced that I was going to receive everything that I needed and desired. It does not matter how old someone is—there’s always the opportunity to learn and grow personally and spiritually.

The door to improving must always be open in order to be able to receive all the possible lessons that come to us every day, even though we are already adults. One of the inspirations to me was the miracle of creation because we are born from the womb, defenseless and so little, after which our physical body is transforming, growing, and changing from a baby to a child to an adolescent to an adult; likewise do our mind and spirit, but never cease to transform and grow to fulfill the path that belongs to us.

I realized that I had a great challenge ahead of me. But I must first decipher a powerful clue to know how to achieve that transformation. It was necessary to implement a new way of life that required me to wrap myself in positivity, and I had to have a clear mind to make sure that it was possible to accomplish it. I also sensed that to find the clues for achieving a total well-being demanded that I revise every aspect of myself, to evaluate and, if necessary, make improvements or changes that contributed to that grand process that I was engaging in.

I set out to examine and learn step by step until I reached the point at which I felt that I had achieved my goal. I began by organizing the steps that occurred to me to follow, concluding that it required putting various fragments together as if joining the pieces of a puzzle.

I knew that a long journey awaited me, but at least, already, I had the first fragment:

We must be aware that our personal growth is individual and ongoing: it is what we call our evolution.

Already several hours had passed while Maite recounted how she arrived at the decision to make that change in her life. It turned out to be quite fascinating to me, but I had another commitment that same day and had to interrupt our delightful encounter. Nevertheless, I asked her if it were possible to meet again, the following week in the same place, so she could continue relating to me her experience; to which Maite agreed with pleasure.

Fragment 2

Thoughts emit vibrations that attract the same

The following week, after sharing another vegetarian lunch with Maite, we began to walk towards the same place that we had met before and, without prior planning, sat down on the same little bench where we were greeted by a soft and pleasant breeze as the birds twittered about in the area of the pond at the center of gardens.

After quickly catching up on the latest events in our lives, my restlessness for Maite to continue her story from where we had left off in our last meeting urged her to begin almost immediately. This time, though, I had brought a notebook in order to take notes since I was so taken by Maite’s enthusiasm, and I asked her to elaborate more fully and to not spare any details.

Maite began with excitement: Already I knew that I had to start putting my plan into action, but I didn’t know where to begin, so I decided to take a small survey that consisted of a single question—I set out to ask a variety of people of different ages, and at the same time I began some research into some of the things that were troubling me to see if it was similar to what others felt.

When asking this question, I would inject a little of my sense of humor playfulness so that people would feel comfortable enough to answer thoughtfully:

What is your great desire in life?

I was not surprised to receive the same answer, almost unanimously, that the greatest desire of all is to enjoy total well-being, which was defined as having good health and to be surrounded by love, abundance, and prosperity, thus obtaining inner peace and happiness.

And that was exactly what I was seeking to obtain for myself, that feeling of total well-being. It was obvious that I was not alone in my desires, and that we all seek, in one way or another, that happiness; what makes the difference in achieving it is the way in which we seek it. I went to a large bookstore in my neighborhood in order to get some more information, to find books on subjects that could help me to gain the knowledge that was required for me to reach my objective.

You could not guess what happened next! I was exhausted searching and reading among so many books that I decided to take a break and went to the cafe in the bookstore to have a hot tea, and there a gentleman approached me as he noticed one of the books that I had chosen; he had a mystical air about him and had a much longer beard than one might normally have. He looked a little perplexed by the half dozen or so books on my table and could see the depth of field by some of the more prominent titles, and, as if he could guess the content of the books, he deduced that what I was investigating was seriously wrapped in a dilemma.

Without introduction, he asked me what it was that I was looking for? And I answered him a little hesitantly, “I'm Maite, and I made a commitment to change my life, so I’m looking for clues to achieving well-being, but I’ve discovered that this is a much more complex question than I had ever imagined, and I have no idea where to begin!” Then the gentleman introduced himself as Marcos and asked if he could join me at the table, as he also had a cup of tea.

I acknowledged, and he quickly got comfortable in his chair, took a small sip of tea, and then he said in a low and slow voice: through all the years that I have lived, which are more than twice as much as you have been on this planet, I am able to recognize that, in our times, that is significant question to ask. Our minds and expectations are normally programmed in a negative way so that we only think that a few are deserving of so much, not knowing that we are all equally part of this world and also deserving of what the world provides. We are born with the right to abundance, which includes abundance of health, love, money, and prosperity.
