A lot of time is wasted by leadership teams in taking crucial decisions for their business which in turn leads to delayed implementation of the new decisions, opportunities being missed out and sometimes, it leads to poor investments. In order to avoid such disappointments and reach strategic decisions faster, the leadership team should not only discuss but also take the decisions in their meetings so that they can quickly deal with the pending issues and waste no further time on them.

Here are some tips to make good use of your leadership time:

Prioritize the issues which need to be dealt with and allocate different time and meetings to deal with them.

Assign value to your tasks and decisions so that the leadership team can deal with the high-value issues and the low-value issues can be delegated to the other management teams.

Ensure that you hold separate meetings for strategic decisions instead of just clubbing them with trivial tasks.

This way, petty daily issues will not govern your time and you'll be able to get done with the more important issues.

Try to come up with a neat and rigid schedule to follow so that you know when you will deal with which issue; when the decision will be taken, who the participants will be and who will give the final approval.

Try to enhance the quality of your meetings and increase participation by handing out the reading materials in advance and inform them whether it's a discussion or a debate.

When everyone's prepared beforehand then time is less likely to be wasted.

Always put forth realistic choices for the discussions in the meetings and make sure you have at least three other viable options to pursue incase of any difficulties.

Once you have taken a decision, make sure that there is no delay in its implementation.

Allocate the resources, time and personnel required to finish the task and make sure that it is delivered on time.

Reasons of wasted time

Poor time management is one of the prime reasons of business failure.

Most of the time the management of the business focuses too much time on issues that have very little impact on the company's value.

The members at the top management spend very little time together in order to discuss strategic issues. Furthermore, the time they spend in their meetings is very short and limited in order to carry out the big decisions of the business. Usually the time is wasted rather than taking the crucial decisions.

Most of the big companies set their agendas for the meetings in a very haphazard manner and thus they miss out on focusing on the key strategic issues and decisions. Research has shown that very little importance is given to the work which is needed to be done prior to the board meetings which in fact, if carried out properly can be a great time saver.
