Starting Up the System


1: In order to boot to the installation disk during start-up, the user must press and hold which key on the keyboard?

Answer:

The user must hold the “C” key to start from the install disk.


2: To select a different operating system at start-up, or to see different start-up options available, which key must the user hold down at start-up?

Answer:

The user must press and hold the Option key at start-up.


3: To start Mac OS X in single user mode, what must one do?

Answer:

To start Mac OS X in single user mode, you must hold the Command and letter “S” key at start-up.


4: How do you access Disk Utility from the install disk?

Answer:

To access Disk Utility from the install disk, you must first boot to the Mac OS X install DVD by holding “C” at start-up. Once the installation screen appears, you must then select your language and proceed to the next screen. Once there, click “Utilities” from the menu at the top, and select “Disk Utility”.


5: Mac OS X 10.6 is generally shipped with 2 install DVDs, an Install DVD and an Applications DVD. Which applications are actually stored on the Applications DVD?

Answer:

Only applications associated with iLife are stored on the Applications disk. (ie. iMovie, iPhoto, iDVD, Garage Band, iWeb)


6: Name two locations where you can find the serial number for an iMac.

Answer:

The serial number is located on the box it came with, or underneath the stand of the iMac. You can also locate the serial number by clicking on the Apple menu from the top-left corner of the screen, and selecting “About this Mac”. Clicking on the “More Information” button will display the computer’s serial number.

Troubleshooting Start-Up Issues


7: While running Mac OS X, what does lack of a start-up chime on initial boot signify?

Answer:

It signifies that Power-On Self test has failed.


8: If your computer running Mac OS X appears to be “stuck” at the grey screen with Apple logo and spinning wheel, what is the proper troubleshooting procedure according to Apple?

Answer:

The proper procedure is to wait for the OS to load. Even though it may appear to be “stuck” on that screen for a while, it will eventually load.


9: How do you reset the parameter ram (PRAM) on a machine running Mac OS X?

Answer:

To reset the “PRAM”, you must hold Command, Option as well as the letters “P” and “R” on start-up.


10: If a CD or DVD becomes stuck in the optical drive, and the eject button appears to be unresponsive, what is the best way to eject the disk?

Answer:

In this situation, shut down the computer, and after a few seconds, turn it back on and hold the eject key right away. This forces the disk to eject.


11: If you need to perform a Repair Disk of your MacIntosh HD, what is the proper method of doing so?

Answer:

You would first need to boot to the Mac OS X install DVD and access Disk Utility from the Utilities menu from the top of the screen. Then, after you have selected the drive to be repaired, click the “Repair Disk” button from the First Aid tab.
