Introduction

I have worked with clients from more than 42 industries to market their products and services on Facebook. There are great reasons why so many companies are marketing on Facebook, and I will provide those reasons farther down in this little book. However, you should also know that not every business needs to be on Facebook.

After traveling the country, speaking to different groups of entrepreneurs and business owners, exhibiting at a handful of quality conferences, and serving clients in so many different industries, I’ve come to the conclusion that there are two dominating attitudes about Facebook.

Attitude #1: Everyone should be on Facebook.

This attitude is broad and subjective. And it’s obviously misleading and misguided. Most likely you’ve heard this attitude many times. Having peeked into the businesses of my clients across the country and a few outside, I have seen firsthand that they do NOT all need to be on Facebook. My competitors blast the opposite message: “You must be on Facebook.” I used to think the same way. Let me tell you, it’s painful to watch clients hire my team to create incredible tools that would help them if they used them, and then watch our good work go to waste because the clients don’t have time or energy to make their Facebook presence work the way it should.

In hindsight, it’s clear that people who aren’t going to use our work don’t need it. They don’t really need my services. But don’t get me wrong. It’s true they wanted a great fan page set up by an expert team, and we delivered, but they didn’t want to follow through after the page was created. Facebook is part of the social media. You have to be social, have to interact, have to spend time, have to build your following. No matter how many great reasons there are for being on social media—if you use good strategies, that is—the fact is you don’t need to be hiring somebody to build you a fan page if you aren’t going to cultivate and maintain the interaction.

Attitude #2: Facebook is a waste of time.

Consider a second attitude: turned off. They’re tired of hearing speakers, authors, gurus, coaches, advisors, and friends say that you should be on Facebook. If that’s you, you’re like many other business owners I’ve spoken.

I’ve had successful business owners tell me they don’t market on Facebook, they don’t understand Facebook, and they don’t want to have anything to do with Facebook. Perhaps you don’t understand why people like to share so many things about what they’re doing. I completely understand how you feel and I too don’t fully understand why so many people spend endless hours on Facebook. As a business owner, it is your responsibility to assess the opportunity of Facebook with an appropriate mindset. You need to have the facts and you need to understand how Facebook could benefit you and what it would take for you to pull it off.
