BROAD RIVER DASH

The chirping of crickets in the cool night air was interrupted by the creaking of dry boards under bare feet. Two more steps. The crickets ceased their chorus in unison and silence fell upon the black night air. The boards creaked again as a distant owl hooted to its mate.

A wiry-framed girl stood motionless upon the final step. Illuminated under the glow of the moon, her white gown hung down from narrow shoulders. Frayed and stained, the bottom of her night clothes fluttered about the bare flesh of her trembling ankles. She turned back to look at the still open door, but freedom beckoned her to continue on. The last wooden step made no sound and her feet made contact with cobbled stones, still warm from the summer sun.
