The night smelt of smoke and menace, and it wrapped around Lila like a needy lover. It slid into her mouth and throat, and made her part of it. For a second she let it, then shaking it off with a shudder she raised her lantern and looked into the fog as best as she could.
It was a limited sight, the fog eating nearly everything before her, and she didn’t like to think what might lie just out of her vision.
Nothing. There is nothing there.
Still she checked the door behind her, the one that was buried in the thick stone wall—but the latch was large, brass and definitely locked. Lila shook it a couple of times to make absolutely sure. No one would be coming through the wall, the gate, or anything that she had locked.
It was her skill—her gift. It was the reason she was out at night when all other sensible citizens of Hyde were asleep.
The fog was poisonous, and all God fearing folk were safe behind their doors, locked down, every crack filled, each window barred. She would check every one of them in her long night. Only the Gatekeeper, the one woman with the skill could be trusted, could be expected to live on the streets.
It was of course lonely out here in the fog, with only the sound of her keys to occupy her; but even those were muted and sullen sounding.
