SO YOU WANT TO BE A SURFER!
Welcome aboard the wonderful world of surfing I hope you enjoy the ride. I certainly have and yes I have been surfing longer than I care to remember. But I have had so much fun and adventures along the way.
Mind you there has been the sharp learning stage where a lot of people just throw in the towel. They give up for a variety of reasons but mainly because they see the locals out in the water making it look so easy.
The good surfers make surfing look effortless the way they glide along waves like the swooping of a nearby sea gull. So the beginner strolls down the beach with surfboard tucked under their arm with great expectations of paddling out and at the very least standing up and riding a wave.
But one hour later the beginner crawls up the beach with his tail between his legs battered and bruised more their ego than body. Yes we have all been there but the main difference is we just kept surfing through thick and thin.
My god I hear you say I didn’t even get past the breakers on the inside. The waves just simply smashed me backwards like a rag doll. Well this is where this book fits in hopefully giving you a few helpful tips to make the ride a little easier.
Best of luck with surfing because I reckon once you’re at a reasonable level it’s one of the best things you’ll do in your life! To be in sync with a wave and to use its power to dance and rip along its face puts a smile on your face! Then you suddenly have the wonderful feeling of “surf stoke” that hopefully will never leave you.
No matter how good you get at popping an air reverse at the drop of a hat. Never forget that you surf for the love of it. A lot of really good surfers that absolutely rip get a little to serious sometimes especially with beginners on the inside giving them the death stare. “That’s me I was just trying to paddle out and some surfer gave me that stare. I know the one.” I’m smiling now we have all had to go through our time in the water as a surfer like serving an apprenticeship. What may have happened you were probably in his way as he was absolutely flying down the wave about to launch an air or get barrelled? Then you pop up out of nowhere right in his way oops bad move but you didn’t no better right.
