Her Deadly Habits

By: Robin Renee Ray

If fumes from anger could be seen, a cloud would have been hanging over Nishi’s head as she walked out of the office complex that she was just fired from. It was only a temporary secretary position but it had been enough to help her get by, month to month. One young man had gotten to the boss before she could and claimed she had been the one to make a sexual advance, causing her termination.

“Little bastard,” she mumbled as she tried to open the back door on her blue Ford Fiesta.

Once home she dropped her belongings by the front door and picked up the phone. When her best friend didn’t answer she left a message. “Carol, that little bastard told Carter that I grabbed his business and they fired me…Me! Call Me.” She hung up and went in and began working on the project that she had been working on for a haunted house for the last two months. Nishi had a gift when it came to creating gory horror and was always sought out when Halloween drew near.

The dismembered mannequin lay haphazardly about her kitchen table; patches of rotted looking flesh glued here and there. The mannequins head was perched on a stand on the counter, its mouth hanging open with yellow slime appearing to drip down its gray chin. One eye hung free from a blob of fake flesh, while the other glared out as if looking at those who would soon be going through the town’s year round haunted house. The phone rang.
