It had been a long night and Ashley had almost all she could take of her parents friends. All she could think was “I turned eighteen last weekend, graduated from high school yesterday, and life is already this boring? What the fuck?” Still, there was a nice new car in the driveway and she was finally done with high school. Her parents had thrown her an enormous graduation party springing for a tent in their yard and catering, but she just wished the party had been a little bit more about her and a little less her parents showing her off.

Her boyfriend Kyle had kept her sane through most of it. He was a great guy, handsome with a friendly face and neatly cut short dark brown hair and he’d worn a parent friendly pair of chinos and a rugby shirt. Better yet, he seemed to get along with everyone where Ashley had difficulty hiding her boredom and impatience at questions about her future and polite congratulations.

Her other friends had arrived later, a little after dark. Just in time to say they’d been at the party, but late enough to avoid the boring parental parts. Taylor was a quiet girl. She’d started school later and was almost 19, somewhat of a brain, and was dressed in a pair of tan corduroys with a loose blue denim shirt. She wore her light brown hair straight down to the shoulders. At her side, Nicole was the complete opposite, her short cropped blue black hair clashed with her pale skin and her blue eyes were ringed with thick eye shadow. But what attracted the most attention was how she dressed. She had on skin tight jeans, one leg black and the other blood red and a tight purple tank top that left little of her ample bust to the imagination. Despite being opposites, the two girls were virtually inseparable. Taylor claimed to be bisexual and Nicole was just crazy, so most people in school had thought they were a couple, but as far as Ashley knew, they were just best friends. The final member of their little group was Daniel. He was Kyle’s best friend and kind of an enigma to Ashley. Like usual, he was in jeans and a tee shirt and his medium length mousey blond hair was in a tussle. She could just never figure him out. He’d been on the football team and run track, but he was quiet, not like the usual jocks, but he didn’t seem to have a lot of other interests.

It wasn’t long before it was just her parents and the five of them sitting under the tent. Daniel was picking at some leftover chips. Her parents seemed to figure out they were third wheels and were packing it in for the night. “Ok Ashley, we’re going to turn in. Just leave everything. We’ll clean up in the morning. Please. Don’t stay up all night,” her mom said fretfully. “And congratulations.”

“Night kids,” her dad said.

Ashley rolled her eyes “we’re not kids dad, we’re all eighteen and high school graduates.”
