Two years later… somewhere in London

Somehow I found myself sitting on a park bench. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and I could feel the warm breeze blowing in my hair. There were people running in the park, keeping fit. I noticed one of the ladies running towards me looked familiar. As she came closer I realised that it was my mother. The last time I saw my mother was in hospital two years ago.
“Mum,” I shouted. “Mum. It’s me Jack.” She ran straight past me. She did not see or hear me. I started to run after her but I couldn’t keep up. She was leaving me behind.
“Mum,” I shouted. “Mum. It’s me Jack.” But she just kept on running. I fell on the floor and hit my head… the pain.

The pain… I had a rude awakening. I was sitting on a chair in the middle of my living room with my hands tied behind my back.
“Where is he?” shouted the voice as I got another punch to my head. I was drifting in and out of consciousness.
“Are you going to tell me where he is or am I going to have to kill you?” said the voice. I recognised that voice. I opened my eyes and standing in front of me was my colleague Mat. He was my teammate, like me an undercover police officer.
“Mat,” I said. “What are you doing? What’s going on?”
“Just tell me where Toxic Ted is?” he replied. “That is all I want to know.” Mat has always been a hard nut but he was my friend. He was one of my friends who helped me change my identity. You just can’t trust anybody these days.
“So you are also a government agent?” I asked.
“You could say that,” replied Mat.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I work for anybody that pays me,” said Mat. “You could say I am a bounty hunter.” Then he put the gun to my head.

“There are certain people out there who are not happy,” said Mat. “The sale of drugs legal or illegal has fallen. Spending is down on healthcare. Many people in the drugs and health industry have lost their jobs. This Pill has cured drug addictions and many illnesses but in return it has created a lot of problems everywhere. The drug barons and the government want Toxic Ted and his Pill found and removed.”

“Now, for the last time. Where is he??”

For the last two years Toxic Ted and I had gone into hiding… well, keeping a low profile. We had been busy fighting against the government and the drug barons. Moving around to different locations making it harder to be found. We found a basement in an old building where Toxic Ted and some friends made and distributed his Pill using our contacts and a network of distributors. I rented a flat in a housing development where nobody took any notice of anybody, until now.

I knew if I told Mat where Toxic Ted was he would kill me and if I didn’t he would kill me. So I said, “Ok. I’ll take you to him.”

I was aware that one day there was a possibility that I would be found so I had made some plans in advance.

From the moment a door or window opens in the flat it sets in motion the security system. You then have one minute to switch it off otherwise it activates a silent alarm. A watch that Toxic Ted and I wore on our wrist then picks this up by vibrating. So Toxic Ted is already aware that I have uninvited guest and knows what to do… Shut down and get out.

Mat untied my hands. “No tricks,” said Mat. I got up from the chair and wiped the blood from my mouth. Mat was in front of me still pointing the gun at my face. He walked towards the front door and reached out to open it. As soon as he touched the lock he was knocked off his feet. He got a shock, which was enough to render him unconscious. This was also part of the security system. When the security system was active and somebody touched the handles of any door or window they got a shock, enough to knock them out. The system was activated when I returned home that morning. I opened the door and I was knocked inside by Mat.
