Making It Legal: Your Contract
Making It Work for Both of You
I've been doing coaching for a long time. A while back, I made a significant change to my business model. This change has made things a LOT better for me. Both in terms of finances and in terms of the ease of working with clients.
I'd like to share with you my NEW system. I think it may work for you as well.
I now RARELY do hourly rate coaching. The new system is not based on hourly rate work. It's based on creating a PARTNERSHIP between me and my clients.
Here is what I'll cover in this article:
1. How to Become ONE of the experts in your Field
2. Determining the RIGHT Client for YOU
3. Set up Sites and Systems to Attract Those Exact Clients
4. Make Sure There is a Good Fit (in all ways)
5. Execute a Contract - Make it Legal, Define All the Terms
6. Make it Work for All Parties
This is not an article on HOW to coach. That’s a different topic. I would however, expect you to be competent coach to implement the system I’m recommending. So, I’m going to assume you know how to coach. If you’re uncertain about your abilities, you’ll need to get them perfected before you try and implement this system.
After covering all of these points, you'll have a very clear idea about how to do this yourself. Now, let's get started.
1. Become ONE of the Experts in Your Field
To get people to come to you for coaching, you have to be perceived as an EXPERT in your field. I did NOT say you have to be THE expert in the field.
You’ll need to do a minimum of three things to make this happen.
First, it would be very helpful if you had a book on your topic of expertise. Self published or traditionally published, having a book will help your credibility immensely.
I’ve written both a book and an article on the topic of book publishing. Both are available in the Kindle store. The topic is a long and complicated one, so I refer you to those other resources if you want to get your book written.
Second, you need to have a great “authority website” on your topic. Take a look at FredGleeck.com as an example. Feel free to copy what I’ve done. It seems to be working pretty well!
Take my site as an example and do everything I do but do it in YOUR style. Make sure that you blog regularly, give people some great FREE resources and include a ton of testimonials if you have them. If not, start getting some.
Testimonials, one of things you’ll want to have on your authority site are the third key element to proving that you’re the expert in your field.
2. Determining the RIGHT Client for YOU
In order to be successful with the system I’m recommending, you need to know the RIGHT kind of client for YOU. I’m sure you’ve worked with people that just CLICKED with you and how you work.
What if that could happen with EVERY client? How would that feel? If you’re like me, the answer would be: AMAZING!!
A client that I feel works great with me, you might find intolerable to deal with. Your set of criteria for YOUR ideal client will perhaps be very different from mine. The question is HOW to find the folks who will work best for YOU!
The place to start is to take a look at your existing or past clients where you’ve had great relationships. List the personality traits of those individuals. Write down as many things as you can think of.
Although your criteria may be different than mine, I do think there are certain “universal” traits a good client should have. Good clients should:
1. Be coachable.
2. Be willing to listen and implement ideas you suggest.
3. Be non-argumentative.
4. Be respectful.
Whenever YOU consider adding a new client, take a hard, cold look at who they are. Do they have a majority of the traits in your IDEAL client? Are they all 4 of the items I just listed above? If so, you’re on the right track.
If you want to get even more objective with your system, then consider . . .
A Personality Profiling System
One way to see if you have a good match is to use a personality profiling system. The simplest one is the DISC profile. This system allows you to get a very basic look at who you are your style of interacting with others.
