Anna parked the Volvo in front of her brother’s house, taking care to point the wheels into the curb on the steep San Francisco street. “Ok, kiddo, Uncle Mark said dinner’s ready.” Hannah, age 13, turned and lugged her duffle bag out of the car from the back seat, stepping out into the crisp autumn air.
“When are you picking me up mom?” Hannah asked nonchalantly.
“By noon, babe.” Anna paused, adding “I just have a few things I need to do tonight and tomorrow.”
Hannah knew that meant her mom had a date. She’d heard Anna speaking on the phone in hushed tones to Claudette for nearly a year now, and it was hard to miss that Anna was often distracted by text messages. Still, Anna said it was nothing serious, not serious enough for Hannah and Claudette to meet yet.
Ever since Taylor had hastily moved out when Hannah was 4, she knew her mom was reluctant to introduce any significant others to Hannah. Hannah had become so attached to Taylor that for years Hannah continued to ask about her, but Anna could only say that sometimes people just don’t work out together.
