Detoxification ("detox") diets and procedures allegedly purge the body of chemicals and toxins -- and, for some, are a means to lose weight. Most detox diets promote herbs, pills, potions, colonics, and/or fasts to rid the body of impurities. The diets are very low in calories. Experts say such diets deprive the body of protein and fluids, lead to dehydration, headaches and fatigue, and may lower metabolism.
These are examples of popular detox diets:
Master Cleanse or Lemonade Diet
Martha's Vineyard Detox Diet
Raw Food Diet
Clean Program
The Clean Program was designed by Dr. Alejandro Junger and claims to detoxify and depuff the body by excluding gluten and common allergens from one’s diet. While following the program, detoxers eat one solid meal a day, drink two liquid meals and take supplements.
The main principle of this cleansing diet is that you should eat 3 servings of wild rice (1 serving equals to 1 cup of rice), ½ cup of dried fruit, and 1 ½ - 2 cups of vegetables.
Drink one cup of warm water first thing in the morning.
You should drink at least 8 cups of water between the meals. You may also drink the following:
Green tea
Herbal tea
Fresh fruit or vegetable juices
Avoid alcoholic beverages and coffee while staying on the cleansing diet.
The duration of the cleansing and detox diet can be anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks. Upon the completion of the diet gradually go back to your normal eating habits.
What Not to Eat too much meat or dairy first couple of days after cleansing diet. Eat more vegetables and whole grains instead.
What to Eat

What Not to Drink

No solid foods are allowed
The Lemonade Diet, also known as the Master Cleanse or Maple Syrup Diet, was developed by the late Stanley Burroughs as a detoxification and fasting program.
The severe plan, consisting of nothing more than a lemon juice concoction, is supposed to "help you lose up to 20 pounds, look younger, ease chronic pain, cleanse your body of internal waste, and boost your energy levels in 10 days."
The Secret of Lemon
Many professional dietitians and nutritionists claim that lemons contain all necessary elements that break up fats and therefore they facilitate weight loss.
In addition lemons contain citric acid, which also helps to burn fat, speed up metabolism and suppress appetite. Citric acid contributes to the intensive production of gastric acid, and, as a result, improves digestion.
Lemon peel contains pectin that helps regulating blood sugar levels.
There are tons of different vitamins found in lemons including vitamin C that strengthens the immune system, which is also an important factor in losing weight.
Overall lemon is an amazing fruits that can cleanse your body, purify blood and lymph, improve metabolism, help you lose weight and prevent some diseases.
Lemonade Diet: What You Can Eat
No solid foods are allowed, nor are any supplements.
The plan calls for you to drink 6 or more servings daily of the lemonade drink. The only other options are a "salt water flush" of 2 teaspoons salt mixed in a quart of water in the morning, and an herbal laxative tea at night, if needed.
A single serving of the Master Cleanse drink consists of:
2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice.
2 tablespoons grade-B organic maple syrup.
1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper.
10 ounces filtered water.

After following this fast for 4-14 days, dieters are urged to slowly ease back into solid food, starting with foods like vegetable soup, followed by fruits and vegetables.
Lemon Diet Plan
The plan is very simple: every morning before breakfast drink the following amount of lemon juice mixed with water.
This diet is not recommended for people with gastrointestinal problems. If you are not sure: consult with your doctor first.
Lemon diet is especially effective in fall or spring time when our bodies need extra vitamins and detoxification. If you combine lemon diet with low calorie diet you will get even better results!

What to Eat

What Not to Eat
No solid foods are allowed
The Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet, which is also touted as the “Lose 21 Pounds in 21 Days Diet," requires ingesting specialized fruit and vegetable liquids. Some solid vegetables are also eaten, and supposedly the combination of these vegetables, fruit drinks and supplements cleanses the body. Roni DeLuz, a registered nurse, says she created the liquid diet while trying to heal herself.
Detoxers choose either a two-day, seven-day or 21-day plan that all involve drinking a certain liquid every two hours. DeLuz recommends a 21-day detox annually, a seven-day cleanup each season and a weekend detox every week. In theory, once the body is free of toxins, it’s able to function better, allowing your metabolism to soar and enabling weight loss. However, experts say any weight loss is more likely the result of severe caloric restriction — not detoxification.
While no solid food is allowed and chewing is prohibited, DeLuz does recommend colonics, coffee enemas, and lymphatic massages to help eliminate toxins.
"It takes about 21 days for a body to naturally cleanse its major organs, and on this program most people can lose about a pound a day," said DeLuz.
For physical activity, followers of this plan are encouraged to walk one mile a day or bounce on a trampoline for 20 minutes.
What You Can Eat
Every two hours, you drink a designated liquid. And at the end of the day, you've consumed 40-48 ounces of water, 32-40 ounces of herbal tea, 16 ounces of vegetable-based soup, and 32 ounces of either a green drink made from vegetables, vegetable juice, or a berry drink.
"The plan provides approximately 1,000 calories and about 20 grams of protein per day, depending on your choices," says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Amy Jamieson-Petonic, MEd, RD.
There are plenty of fruits and vegetables on the Lose 21 Pounds in 21 Days plan that are either juiced, pureed, cooked, or come in a powdered form. But there's very little else. Allowed foods include garlic, beans, carrots, cucumbers, celery, collard greens, kale, beets, sweet potatoes, summer squashes, most green vegetables, tomatoes, and purple cabbage.
Sample Menu
On the program dieters have three choices - either a two-day plan, a seven-day tune-up option or the full 21-day detox. The daily schedule for all three is the same.
8:30 am Breakfast is a high-density antioxidant berry drink, an herbal cleansing formula, a cup of hot herbal tea and eight ounces of water
At 10:30 am, you'll have eight ounces of water and eight ounces of hot or iced herbal tea.
At 12:30 pm, Lunch consists of either one cup of fresh vegetable juice (made at home in a juicer) or a green drink (made from packets of powder), as well as another eight ounces of water, more of the herbal cleansing formula and an enzyme capsule.
At 2:30 pm, you'll repeat your 10:30 "snack." At 4:30, dieters have either a high-density antioxidant or berry drink.
At 6:00 pm, Dinner consists of one cup of homemade cleansing soup, one cup of broth, one cup of herbal tea, more herbal cleansing formula, 8-ounces of water and another enzyme capsule.
At 7:30 pm, you'll have either eight ounces of water or tea. At bedtime, dieters take an aloe vera supplement.
Kale has a definite role to play in support of the body's detoxification processes. The isothiocyanates (ITCs) made from kale's glucosinolates have been shown to help regulate detox activities in our cells.
Detox Diet Foods
These detox diet foods are the vegetables and fruits.
Citrus fruit ranks highly for it’s cleansing properties. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes are exceptionally high vitamin C content which also aids in detoxification.
