She wasn’t like the other women I’ve known. She looked me straight in the eye and faced me as an equal. That doesn’t happen very often for werewolves like me. I’m more used to people looking at me with fear and disgust when I’m in my wolf-form. I didn’t even know her name, though I was sure I’d seen her before. She’d bowled into my life and now I’d do anything to keep her safe. And the two girls who were with her.
It was down to the other wolves. Daniel and Wallis. They had men in the town doing their dirty work for them now. Bringing those three girls out here to the woods so they could do who-knows-what to them. It wasn’t right. The wolves had been howling for hours now. Doing their best to scare their prey. I’d tried to keep them away with howls of my own, but it was two against one and they knew it.
It had always been that way with them. They were older than me. They’d already known each other for years when I came along. I’d been young and vulnerable and they’d taken me in. Wallis had shown me what it really meant to be a wolf. They’d both loved me when I’d hated myself. But life hadn’t been kind to the three of us. When the hunters came with their guns, my friends turned into bitter shadows of their former selves.
There’d be no reasoning with them. I’d had to leave my fierce lover back in the old wooden shack that belonged to the dead hunters. She hadn’t wanted me to go. If I’d stayed with her a minute longer, I wouldn’t have been able to tear myself away from her. But the wolves were getting closer. If I didn’t do something, they’d come and claim their new playthings. The other two girls weren’t as strong as my new mate. If Wallis and Daniel got hold of them, they wouldn’t make it to morning. Not with their minds intact, anyway. And as brave as my woman was, it wouldn’t save her from their murderous intentions.
I bounded through the woods, sniffing out their trails. My body changed as I ran, turning me from a biped to a four-legged wolf. That’s how they would be. All traces of humanity hidden behind sharp claws and a muzzle full of teeth. They’d been like family to me. Now I’d have to use my familiarity with them to get me through the night.
