Calvin Richards stayed up all night watching the cage. Jason, his friend and lover, had allowed himself to be locked inside. Tonight was the full moon. Jason knew he would transform into a full wolf, and had taken precautions.

The transformation was startling at first. Calvin had already seen his friend transform into a half-wolf many times, but this was different. There was nothing recognizable of Jason left after the transformation. The wolf rammed against the cage, and Calvin worried it might break.

Gradually, the Jason-wolf settled down, as it realized it couldn't escape the cage. It watched Calvin the whole night. Finally, dawn broke, and the transformation reversed itself. Calvin let Jason out of the cage, and took him to a Denny's, where he ate his way through two breakfasts.

A week later, Jason called Calvin and asked him to come over.

* * *

Calvin drove over. Up in Jason's room, Jason began to explain some things.

First off, don't freak. I want to show you something.” Jason said.

Calvin raised an eyebrow. “Something new?”

Jason nodded. “I think I've learned to control my transformation to a full wolf.”

Calvin's eyes went wide. “You THINK? And what if you're wrong? You eat me?”

Jason frowned. “I didn't want to eat you when you locked me up, you know. I was just pissed at being locked up. I think. It's hard to remember how it was that first time. But I'm getting better at keeping my wolf memories now. I've gone out at night as a wolf, and I can remember where I went.”

Isn't that dangerous?” Calvin asked. “What if you got shot? Or run over?”

I'm still smarter than your average wolf, Calvin. And wolves are pretty smart to begin with. It's not like I'm wandering through people's backyards.”

Still...” Calvin said. “Alright, if you can control it, show me.”

Jason stripped down, and kneeled on the floor. He closed his eyes, concentrating.

The change happened again. It was more rapid than when Jason changed into his half-wolf form, perhaps because that change was more of a reflex. This change was simply Jason willing it to happen. Before you could blink, Jason was a full wolf, though still very much man-sized.

Jason?” Calvin asked. “Are you still there, buddy?”

The Jason-wolf perked its ears. Calvin cautiously stepped forward. “Jason,” he said, “shake hands with me.”

Jason tilted his head to the side, appearing to consider the offer. Then he raised his paw and set it down on Calvin's hand.

Alright, so you understand what I'm saying at least. But how much of Jason is paying attention right now? Alright, a test. Let's see... Jason, bring me a pair of blue underwear.”

Jason seemed to consider this longer. Calvin wondered if the idea was too abstract for him to figure out. But after a moment, Jason padded over to his dresser and pulled the top drawer out with a heavy paw. He moved his snout through the clothing until he found what Calvin had wanted – a pair of blue boxer shorts. He brought them back to Calvin and dropped them at his feet, giving a grin.

Calvin laughed. “Alright, very impressive. It seems like you're well in control of the wolf. Now change back before your mom gets home and finds you like that.”

The wolf closed its eyes and began to change. In the blink of an eye, Jason was back to his human form. Still naked, he sat on the bed next to Calvin.

I told you I could control it now.” he said.

Calvin smiled. “That's good. Maybe we won't have to lock you up every full moon.”

Jason gave a shrug. “I dunno if I can control it that well. But I'm getting better. I noticed something the first night I transformed into the full wolf, and I still notice it every time I transform.”

What's that?” Calvin asked.

I can sort of smell the presence of other werewolves. I think there's a pack that lives in the forest near where we got attacked. I keep getting smells from that direction. I want to go check it out.”

Alone?!” Calvin said. “Are you crazy? We already got attacked by one wolf. If there really is a whole pack of them out there, shouldn't we stay away?”
