Steven felt stupid for taking the wager; he felt that he had been goaded into it when Patrick had called him a coward. They had all been the worse for wear from alcohol after a night in the pub, and the talk had turned to ghosts and ghost stories.

They had all had some sort of story to tell that had happened to them or to someone they knew. Steven had been in fits of laughter all the way through and had finally told them that he did not believe in ghosts or the supernatural. They then had sat and debated the subject, but nobody could sway Steven from his disbelief. That was when the wager had been put forward.

The wager was for Steven to spend one complete night in the local graveyard. At first he had laughed it off, but gradually his friends became more insistent and it had come to a head when Patrick had called him a coward. He finally agreed to the wager which was to the value of a thousand pounds.
