I hate admitting, even to myself, that I’m a badge bunny. It’s just not something I’d expect of a successful professional woman with her share of male attention. Yet here I am, cooking dinner for myself with a police scanner droning in the background. I look at my watch—a quarter to seven. They’ll be getting on duty in about fifteen minutes, the guys on the night shift. Specifically, Officers Jared Rowe and Brandon Palmer. I take some comfort in telling myself I’m not a police groupie in general, just when it comes to those two. Like that makes the obsessive behavior and constant fantasizing any better.
It’s been five months since I came home and interrupted two burglars rifling through my belongings. I ran outside to the neighbor’s place, dialing 911 on my cell phone as I went. Rowe and Palmer were the officers who responded, squealing up in front of my house and going room to room while other officers set up a search perimeter and swept the area with a canine unit, all while I watched from the picture window next door.
For weeks after that, I panicked every time I heard the faintest noise. I felt bad for calling the police every three or four days, but either Rowe or Palmer, sometimes both, always came by and took a look around and assured me it was better to call and be wrong than to wait until it was too late.
