Several years ago there lived a boy who loved to talk.

He talked in the house, in the yard, in the car, and in the store. He talked to his mom and dad, to his sis and friends, and to the cat and dog. He even talked to himself.

He'd whisper, mutter, chatter-jabber, sing-scream-and-shout.

He made small talk and tall talk, sweet talk and neat talk, strong talk and long talk, deep talk and leap talk, fast talk and sass talk, mad talk and glad talk. He'd talk-talk-talk.

And everybody loved to listen.

Then one day things changed. The boy could not talk.

He tried to chatter, but not a word did scatter. He tried to sing, but not a note did ring. He tried to shout, but not a sound came out. The boy could not even whisper.

Scared, he began to cry.

Then a BIG VOICE from high above thundered:

Jumping with joy, the boy shouted, "I can talk again. I can talk. I can talk."

The BIG VOICE responded:

The boy hollered back, "I don’t believe you. My words are fine."

But he noticed they were not as loud as before.

Cupping a hand around his mouth, the boy sucked in all the air he could hold and shouted, "I can talk as loudly as I want."

But the words were weaker than before.

The boy ran to his room, slammed the door, and flung himself on the bed.
