This book was written in response to the flood of questions asked at my “Success Motivation Coaching” seminars, regarding ethics in transitioning into coaching. Coaching is an exciting and currently increasing specialty opportunity for counselors, counselors and human services providers. Throughout this book I will use the term “counselor” to encompass all mental health and/or human services professionals. Whether you want to become a professional coach, or simply use coaching as a therapeutic modality, this book will assist you in gaining confidence and competence. My goal is to answer any and all questions you may have about coaching, and motivate you to pursue this exciting profession without fear. There is a wealth of resources available to you, to assist you in this pursuit. There is also a wealth of personal satisfaction and fulfillment that can come to you when you are assisting others in goal achievement (and seeing their happy results!).
The profession of coaching was born from what we used to call “Industrial Psychology” or “Organizational Consulting.” Initially, most coaching was done in the form of consulting. Often organizational consultants were trained in psychology, which is extremely helpful when working with groups of people who are coming together toward a common purpose. Many counselors have already been successfully coaching for many years. For example, past president of the American Psychological Association (APA), Richard Suinn, Ph.D. is a Sports Psychologist who provides mental coaching for Olympic athletes. Jim Loehr, Ed.D., is a Performance Psychologist for corporations as well as professional athletes. Martin Seligman, Ph.D., past president of the APA is now coaching and training. Many mental health professionals are becoming increasingly interested and hopeful about this popular market niche which offers enormous potential benefits and rewards to both consumers and counselors.
Coaching has become increasingly popular in the last decade, and continues to soar as a profession. One reason is that people are living longer, and are seeking to find more meaning in their lives that will propel them through the rest of their lives. Another reason is that people are becoming more affluent, and many can afford the luxury of an assistant to help them turn their dreams into realities. Another reason is that our world is becoming more competitive, and in order to succeed, many people need the extra support that a coach can offer.
