Gospel 101
Introduction
As a new Christian I had the privilege of listening to a teaching series on the book of Romans. The series was taught live, in the late 1980’s, by Rev. Steve Ladieu.
I can still remember how much that series impacted my life with the Lord.
Steve’s ability to share powerful truths in such simple terms made the Bible the most exciting book I had ever read. The Bible suddenly became alive and was for me as it still is today – The Word of God.
The heart behind this book is to share the gospel in simple terms using the book of Romans as a backdrop. Many of these truths have come from that early teaching series with additional insights I’ve gleaned over the years.
My prayer is that you will fall in love with Jesus—for His sacrifice—for His Word—for who He is. This book is not simply for Christians, but can be read by anyone who desires to know the truth—and in finding it—find a relationship with God.
I can still remember one of my favorite quotes from Steve when he said:
“God created the universe for the earth, the earth for Man, and Man for fellowship with Him.” ~Steve Ladieu
May you too find love and fellowship - with the Father and with His Son.

Gospel 101
CHAPTER ONE – It’s Good News
The Bible is The Word of God and was written to the entire human race. Although you may read several references of to both Jew and Greek, the gospel is written to every one.
In the Bible the word for gospel simply means good news.
What important truth does the gospel contain?
How you can be right with God.
Rom. 1:16-17 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel [good news]. I see it as the very power of God working for the salvation of everyone who believes it, for the Jew first but also for the Greek [Gentiles]. (Emphasis Mine)
I see in it God’s plan for making men right in his sight, a process begun and continued by their faith. For, as the scripture says: The righteous shall live by faith. (Emphasis Mine)
The good news is about a powerful God who can bring salvation into anyone’s life
who is willing to receive it. The gospel declares that God is a loving Father whose heart is to reveal His plan for making people right in His sight.
Why do we need to be made right? Why do we need a savior?
Romans 3:23 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
For there is no distinction to be made anywhere: everyone has sinned, everyone falls short of the beauty of God’s plan.
Everyone has sinned; everyone has fallen miserably short of the glory of God. Therefore, our heavenly Father developed a plan—a solution—to sin once and for all. God calls this plan His gift of righteousness which is ascribed to Man through faith in His Son—Jesus Christ.
Righteousness can be defined as the desirable quality of being able to stand before God without any sin consciousness, guilt or condemnation.
God’s primary objective of sharing the gospel is to produce faith in the redemption of His Son—Jesus Christ.
The heart of this message is that GOD IS A FAMILY MAN who longs for an intimate relationship with us. Your relationship with Christ is the bridge between your destiny and its fulfillment.
“God created the universe for the earth, the earth for Man, and Man for fellowship with Him.” ~Steve Ladieu
It’s that simple.
In the book of Romans we see a detailed description of man’s historical response to God. God has shown His love, His power, and His goodness to Man. Yet man has still rejected God. Nevertheless, God in His great mercy has provided a complete payment for the sins of Man, in the hope of developing an intimate relationship with all those willing to believe in His Son—Jesus Christ.
Now the righteousness [virtue] of God is available to all.
Romans 3:21-26 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
But now we are seeing the righteousness of God declared quite apart from the Law (though amply testified to by both Law and Prophets) - it is a right relationship given to, and operating in, all who have faith in Jesus Christ.
For there is no distinction to be made anywhere: everyone has sinned, everyone falls short of the beauty of God’s plan. [Under this divine plan] A man who has faith is now freely acquitted in the eyes of God by his generous dealing in the redemptive act of Christ Jesus. (Emphasis mine)
God has appointed him [Jesus Christ] as the means of propitiation [an atoning sacrifice], a propitiation accomplished by the shedding of his blood, to be received and made effective in ourselves [our lives] by faith. (Emphasis mine)
God has done this to demonstrate his righteousness both by the wiping out of the sins of the past (the time when he withheld his hand), and by showing in the present time that he is a just God and that he justifies every man who has faith in Jesus.
How To Receive Righteousness
We receive God’s gift of righteousness by faith. We are not made righteous before God by doing good works, or by the act of circumcision. Neither are people righteous before God by trying to keep the Old Testament laws.
Romans 4:4-8 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
Now if a man works [good works] his wages are not counted as a gift but as a fair reward [wage]. But if a man, irrespective of his work, has faith in him who justifies the sinful, then that man’s faith is counted as righteousness.
This is the happy state of the man whom God accounts righteous, apart from his achievements, as David expresses it: “Blessed are they whose iniquities [lawless deeds] are forgiven and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin.” (Emphasis mine)
Righteousness Ascribed By Faith
About four thousands of years ago, God reached out to a man by the name of Abraham. It was through this man that God would create the nation of Israel. Abraham walked before God with such child-like faith that he became known as the father of all them that believe. When we look at the life of Abraham, we see that he simply believed and as a result—righteousness was ascribed to him by God.
In the same way Abraham believed God and became a righteous man, the gift of righteousness is also ascribed to us, by simply believing in Jesus Christ.
We are made righteous before God by believing in the substitution and sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
We confess Jesus as Lord of our lives and believe in our heart that God has raised him from the dead. At that moment of faith, we are justified; just as if we’ve never sinned.
Romans 10:8b-13 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
It is this word, which is the burden of our preaching, and it says, in effect, “If you openly admit by your own lips that Jesus is the Lord, and if you believe in your own heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
For it is believing in the heart that makes a man righteous before God, and it is stating his belief by his own lips that confirms his salvation. And the scripture says: “Whosoever believes in him shall not be disappointed.” (Emphasis Mine)
And that “whosoever” means anyone, without distinction between Jew or Greek. For all have the same Lord, whose boundless resources are sufficient for all who turn to him in faith. For: “Whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord [Jesus] shall be saved.” (Emphasis mine)
Are You? If you’re not familiar with this expression, it’s used to describe an individual who’s been listening, for far too long, to a pack of lies. It may have tasted sweet at first, but in the end none of it is good for you - it simply leaves you empty.
Let me shine some light on what I consider to be two symptoms.
They are: sin consciousness and self condemnation.
Perhaps you don’t struggle with these issues; however, a number of people do.
• Sin consciousness can simply be defined as always being aware of our sins; our shortcomings; our failures.
• Self condemnation can be defined as always beating ourselves up because we feel like we just don’t measure up.
Does God really want us to live under this guilt; under this condemnation?
No!
God doesn’t want us to live one day under that lie.
Our sin problem was handled years ago through Jesus Christ.
The only problem NOW is whether or not we will accept Jesus Christ.
Romans chapter eight, verse one says, “The truth is that no condemnation now hangs over the head of those who are in Christ Jesus.”
Because of the Jesus Christ - all who believe are counted as righteous before God.
Romans 10:10-11 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
For it is believing in the heart that makes a man righteous before God, and it is stating his belief by his own lips that confirms his salvation. And the scripture says: “Whosoever believes in him shall not be disappointed.” (Emphasis Mine)
That’s really good news.
Gospel 101
CHAPTER TWO – The Resurrection
The resurrection of Jesus was heaven’s powerful declaration that He is the Son of God. Jesus is the only one who is still alive, after having been raised from the dead over two thousand years ago.
Christianity Is Unique
What makes Christianity so unique is that our leader Jesus came back from the dead.
We need to recognize that Jesus’ resurrection confirms that He is the son of God. Therefore, anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord Jesus shall be saved and recognized as being righteous before God.
It’s not too good to be true. It’s too true to be ignored.
This miraculous event confirms Jesus to be the Son of God.
Jesus Declared - The Son Of God
Romans 1:3-4 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
The gospel is centered in God’s Son, a descendant of David by human genealogy and patently [deliberately] marked out as the Son of God by the power of that Spirit of holiness which raised him to life again from the dead. (Emphasis mine)
Jesus knew there would be people in the world who would never believe, even though He came back from the dead.
He said to him, If they do not hear and listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded and convinced and believe [even] if someone should rise from the dead.
Not everyone will believe the gospel, but if you’re reading this book you have an opportunity to believe.
Why should you believe?
Because God has provided eye witnesses of the resurrection of His Son.
Eye Witnesses
I Corinthians 15:1-8 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
Now, my brothers, I want to remind you of the Gospel which I have previously preached to you, which you accepted, on which you have taken your stand and by which, if you remain faithful to the message I gave you, your salvation is being worked out - unless, of course, your faith had no meaning behind it at all.
For I passed on to you, - as essential , the message I had myself received - that Christ died for our sins, as the scriptures said he would; that he was buried and rose again on the third day, again as the scriptures foretold.
He was seen by Cephas [Peter], then by the twelve, and subsequently he was seen simultaneously by over five hundred Christians, of whom the majority are still alive, though some have since died. (Emphasis Mine)
He was then seen by James, then by all the messengers. And last of all, as if to one born abnormally late, he appeared to me!
Forever Settled In Heaven
In a court of law by the word of one or two witnesses a case is settled. Jesus Christ was seen alive by over five hundred people after his resurrection. Therefore, the matter should be forever settled in our minds that Jesus was raised from the dead.
Since the resurrection is at the very heart of the gospel, how can any Christian deny life after death?
I Corinthians 15:12-19 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
Now if the rising of Christ from the dead is the very heart of our message, how can some of you deny that there is any resurrection? For if there is no such thing as the resurrection of the dead, then Christ was never raised.
And if Christ was not raised then neither our preaching nor your faith has any meaning at all. Further it would mean that we are lying in our witness for God, for we have given our solemn testimony that he did raise up Christ - and that is utterly false if it should be true that the dead do not, in fact, rise again!
For if the dead do not rise neither did Christ rise, and if Christ did not rise your faith is futile and your sins have never been forgiven. Moreover those who have died believing in Christ are utterly dead and gone. Truly, if our hope in Christ were limited to this life only we should, of all mankind be the most to be pitied!
Christianity rests solely upon the truth of scripture that Christ arose from the dead.
The last enemy of all to be destroyed is death itself.
I Corinthians 15:20-23 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
But the glorious fact is that Christ did rise from the dead: he has become the very first to rise of all who sleep the sleep of death.
As death entered the world through a man [Adam], so has rising from the dead come to us through a man [Jesus Christ]! (Emphasis Mine)
As members of a sinful race all men die; as members of the Christ of God all men shall be raised to life, each in his proper order, with Christ the very first and after him all who belong to him when he comes.
Living Forever
The dead and the living will become immortal when Christ returns.
I Corinthians 15:51-54 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
Listen, and I will tell you a secret. We shall not all die, but suddenly, in the twinkling of an eye, every one of us will be changed as the trumpet sounds! The trumpet will sound and the dead shall be raised beyond the reach of corruption, and we who are still alive shall suddenly be utterly changed.
For this perishable nature of ours must be wrapped in imperishability, these bodies which are mortal must be wrapped in immortality.
So when the perishable is lost in the imperishable, the mortal lost in the immortal, this saying will come true: 'Death is swallowed up in victory' 'O death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?'
The Resurrection brings us immortality; victory over death and hell through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The Great Exchange
We must understand that the wages of sin is death. Someone had to die for your sins and for mine. Because of His great love, Jesus willingly stood in our place making the ultimate sacrifice for you and for me.
Jesus took our sins, our trespasses, and our iniquities to the cross, paying the ultimate price for our redemption. We have been redeemed by His blood.
The wrath that you and I deserved was poured out upon the Lord Jesus Christ.
Why?
So that our sins could be forever purged - our redemption forever sure.
1 Peter 1:18-19 - New King James Version
Knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. (Emphasis Mine)
But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified. (Emphasis Mine)
When Jesus took His last breath, when the very last drop of his precious blood was spilled; when the complete payment for our sins had been made - God did something absolutely wonderful – He raised Jesus Christ from the dead
Because our justification was completely paid for by the Lord Jesus, God can now ascribe righteousness to man, giving eternal life to all who has faith in Jesus Christ.
Sins and Sin Nature
The first section of Romans 1:18-5:11 deals with Man’s sins, actions, and attitudes. It shows how God deals with Man’s sins; the fruit of sin nature.
Romans 5:1-11 shows us what to do with our righteousness and justification after we’ve received it.
From without strength, ungodly, and sinners to being able to have a right relationship with God! From sinners to saints! What a God, what a Lord, what a Savior!
Just when you think it can’t get any better, it does.
In Romans 5:12-8:39, God begins to reveal sin nature itself, which produces sinful actions and attitudes. God explains the root of Man’s sin problem and His solution for it in Christ.
Romans 5:12 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
This, then, is what happened. Sin [nature] made its entry into the world through one man, and through sin, death. The entail [root cause] of sin and death passed on to the whole human race, and no one could break it for no one was himself free from sin. (Emphasis mine)
The Tree Of The Knowledge Of Good And Evil
Adam was created a three part being. He was created, made, and formed—spirit, soul and body in the image and likeness of God.
God told Adam that in the day that he would eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he would surely die.
Did Adam eat of that tree? Yes.
Did he die? Yes and no.
The day that Adam ate from the tree of sin he died - spiritually. The holy spirit within Adam departed. The absence of life, biblically speaking, is referred to as death.
Adam didn’t physically die until hundreds of years later, however the seeds of sin had been planted and death was inevitable. The spirit within Adam became corrupt and was no longer in harmony with God.
Adam could no longer receive direct revelation from God. From this time forward until the day of Pentecost, it was only when the Holy Spirit came upon certain individuals (in the Old Testament) could they have an intimate relationship with God. It was only then that they could know and understand through the Spirit of God which was upon them.
Adam was created to have the Spirit of God living within. Why? To allow Adam to have an intimate relationship [oneness] with God as a son, so He could commune with God in his inner being.
God is Spirit and they that worship Him must do so in spirit and in truth.
For example the reason that you and I can surf the internet and communicate with nearly anyone online is because of a common set of software applications.
If you and I did not have this software in common, we could not communicate online.
In the same way, for us to communicate [commune] with God who is the Holy Spirit, we ourselves must have the gift of holy spirit.
When Adam allowed his soul to rule instead of being led by the Holy Spirit, there were tremendous consequences. First, he lost his (inner) spiritual connection and was no longer able to communicate (commune) with God. Then the condition of spiritual death was passed on to all his children; sentencing them to a life of sin and death.
That is why all men sin, because they are born with a corrupt nature of separation from God. A diseased branch, separated from a good tree, will always bear corrupt fruit. Much like a virus, the nature of sin spread throughout all mankind.
But God in His abounding love and grace provided a complete deliverance and restoration from our sinful condition through the sacrifice of His Son—Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:17 - The New English Bible
For if by the wrong doing of that one man [Adam] death established it’s reign, through a single sinner, much more shall those who receive in far greater measure God’s grace, and His gift of righteousness, live and reign through the one man, Jesus Christ. (Emphasis mine)
In being a part of the human race, we inherited a sin nature through the one man, Adam. But those who have received God’s gift of righteousness through His grace have received new spiritual life through the one man - Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:19 - The New English Bible
For
as through the disobedience of the one man [Adam] the many were made
sinners, so through the obedience of the one man [Jesus—the
last Adam—see
I Cor. 15:45] the many will be made righteous. (Emphasis mine)
Through Adam’s disobedience we were MADE sinners through our natural birth.
For example, a tricycle made
with only two wheels will fall when ridden. Man made without the holy
spirit [i.e., spirit,
soul and body] is an accident looking for a place to happen.
Through having faith in Jesus Christ, those who believe in Him are MADE righteous and given a new spirit through a new birth experience.
MADE righteous?
I thought that through my physical birth I was MADE a sinner!
Yes, you were.
But NOW through being born again you are MADE righteous before God. Now you have a new nature; a new spiritual life. Awesome!
Romans 5:21 - The New English Bible
In order that, as sin [nature] established its reign by way of death, so God’s grace might establish its reign in righteousness, and issue in [bringing] eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord. (Emphasis mine)
Eternal life! Not just a new life, not just a spiritual life, but ETERNAL life!
All that the first Adam lost - Christ, as the last Adam, has regained, and more. Much more!
Romans, Chapter 5:12-21 declares that a new nature of eternal life is given to those who have received the gift of righteousness through faith. This new nature is a MAKING just as the first nature was how we were MADE through our natural birth.
The difference being that the first nature, inherited by Adam, was spiritual death. The new nature, being born again, is eternal, righteous, spiritual life.
Romans Chapters six and seven show us how to walk in this new nature and how not to.
Not by ignorance, or abuse of grace. Not by trying to keep the Old Testament law.
But, by recognizing Jesus Christ’s completed work for us and in us; by living our lives unto God, as a new race of people who have been raised from the dead (spiritually) and given eternal life.
Romans 6:9-11 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
We can be sure that the risen Christ never dies again - death's power to touch him is finished. He died, because of [our] sin [nature], once: he lives for God for ever. In the same way look upon yourselves as dead to the appeal and power of sin but alive and sensitive to the call of God through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Emphasis Mine)
Eternal Life
Jesus died for our sins; once and for all. For God to raise Jesus from the dead, He had to give Him a new life.
What kind of life was it?
It was eternal life. Jesus was made a life quickening spirit.
1 Cor. 15:45 - The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
It is written, moreover, that: “The first man Adam became a living being”. So the last Adam [Jesus Christ] is a life-giving Spirit. (Emphasis mine)
We don’t know all of the specifics regarding the new life given to Jesus, but we do know some details by reading about Him after his resurrection.
This new life enlivened his physical body remarkably. The life in Him is eternal. Therefore, it made his physical body unlimited in scope and function. Far greater than when He walked the earth, prior to his crucifixion.
Romans 6:11 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
In the same way look upon yourselves as dead to the appeal and power of sin but alive and sensitive to the call of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
We are to consider ourselves dead (without life) to sin, but alive unto God through what Jesus Christ did for us, and now, is living in us. What did Jesus do with his new life? He simply lived for God.
By accepting Jesus we become alive to God. We NOW have the gift of holy spirit and the person of The Holy Spirit living within! Once again, God’s blueprint for how to walk with Him in the Spirit can be carried out.
“God created the universe for the earth, the earth for Man, and Man for fellowship with Him.” ~Steve Ladieu
All that we were, Christ became. So that as He is, so are we. We are forever identified with Jesus Christ through our new birth experience.
First Exhortation
Romans 6:11 is the first exhortation recorded in the book of Romans. It is the first thing God asks a new Christian to do.
Romans 6:11 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
In the same way look upon yourselves as dead to the appeal and power of sin but alive and sensitive to the call of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Our heavenly Father wants us to think of ourselves as identified with Jesus Christ, having a new spiritual life, and being alive unto Him. God’s first desire is for a relationship—for intimacy. Intimacy means “Into-Me-See.”
That is the “why” of the plan of redemption.
Everything in our Christian life is built upon our relationship with God.
Second Exhortation
Here is the second exhortation.
Romans 6:12-14 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
Do not, then, allow sin to establish any power over your mortal bodies in making you give way to its lusts. Nor hand over your bodily parts to be, as it were, weapons of evil for the devil’s purposes. But, like men rescued from certain death, put yourselves in God’s hands as weapons of good for his own purposes. For sin can never be your master [anymore] - you are no longer living under the Law, but under grace. (Emphasis mine)
Don’t allow sin to rule your mortal body. Don’t yield to sin because you have been set free from it. Instead, yield yourselves to God as being alive from the dead.
Live for God with your new nature. Reckon the old sin nature DEAD, and the new nature ALIVE. Don’t be led by your mind or emotions; be led by the Spirit of God.
Submit your will to God and live for Him.
Fulfill God’s deepest desire—be intimate with Him—Worship Him—He is worthy of all our love and adoration.
This is how we walk in the new nature. This is how we reign in life by being led by the Spirit of God.
II Cor 5:17 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
For if a man is in Christ he becomes a new person altogether - the past is finished and gone, everything has become fresh and new.
How many times have you ever wanted to have a fresh start? You can with Jesus Christ.
When we are born again, God creates within us a new nature. The old nature we inherited from Adam died with Jesus on the cross at Calvary.
In Galatians, God reinforces this truth.
For neither is circumcision [now] of any importance, nor uncircumcision, but [only] a new creation [the result of a new birth and a new nature in Christ Jesus, the Messiah].
Many people today are still hung up on trying to keep the Old Covenant law in order to be right with God. That’s because they fail to realize we have a New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ.
Jesus came to set the captives free. He was the complete fulfillment of the law in the Old Covenant. However, in the New Covenant Jesus allows us to walk in His Righteousness while we grow up in Him.
Jesus preached a new message; a fresh perspective that would set people free who were under religious bondage.
The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon Me, because He has anointed Me [the Anointed One, the Messiah] to preach the good news (the Gospel) to the poor; He has sent Me to announce release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth as delivered those who are oppressed [who are downtrodden, bruised, crushed, and broken down by calamity].
Jesus walked into the Church of his day with a message of setting people free from religion. Today, this message still rings true.
God has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of light.
Col 1:11-14 – The New Testament in Modern English (J.B. Phillips)
As you live this new life, we pray that you will be strengthened from God’s boundless resources, so that you will find yourselves able to pass through any experience and endure it with courage. You will even be able to thank God in the midst of pain and distress because you are privileged to share the lot of those who are living in the light.
For we must never forget that he rescued us from the power of darkness, and re-established us in the kingdom of his beloved Son, that is, in the kingdom of light. For it is by his Son alone that we have been redeemed and have had our sins forgiven.
Because God created within us a new spirit—a new creation—we are to see ourselves as God see us. As He is, so are we in this world.
It is important to understand that our mind did not change when we were born again, so we need to think differently about ourselves than we’ve ever thought before.
