Acquaintance
A Collection of Sonnets
by
Eugene Docena
Introduction
A Sonnet is Italian for “little song.” Like many poems that sing songs and stories (savored and scribed), a Sonnet has more than just one form to follow and portray the love, regret, and taste for life itself between ink and words. Pace the rhymes and move with the rhythm as you read the lamentation of six months in a Quarter-Lifer’s year through his relationships (intimate and platonic), reminiscence, remorse, and search for hope within it all.
Dear friend amongst those whom cared much of much
May this find you well and bring you the sun
For clouds have passed from dusky lore spoken
Choking
vascular conscience anon
Forget not Isaiah's mark and promise
Stomp on sophomores by heel scuffed pavement-gold
Thus silver paint curse not Carpenter's craft
To
those under His wing: your burdens sold
Pray as Leviticus gospels
Hosanna
For sure "...they know not what they do."
But knowing enough frees choices to make
Hence
feel Almighty grace, love, and argue
Let none deter you for
their benefit
You are where God wants you to be Spirit
Who’s On Top?
Eyes
that squint at sunrise fierce without truce
Wink once for a chance
to twinkle at his
‘til the dusk of each morn she will seek
that
Of what could be destined trails to what is
May a white
horse stand before her today
Though they will argue crests,
shields, and armor
Besting eaches bravery for her heart
They’ll
don lances to carry her honor
But amongst his own a toll will come
to
As a test of seasons changes the mind
A double-edged sword
shall unsheathe herself
And the sheen of metal will rust unkind
So on to battle, on with war! Says he
But to the victor –
the spoils! Thus says she
Lazy Computer Technicians
Machinery checks repetitious modes;
For often will it be often-often,
Often mistaken perfect 'til proven;
Neglected by its Maker's lazy codes–
The heat and metal combined will melt nodes…
Pretentious offers dupe consumers in
To pay for none of what they need. Preachin'!
Preachin' without proof, sell nothing that "owns"
So hence we review experiences,
Ink our words on white sheets of papers,
Civilize the lummox whose lost senses
Took four digits from accounts: his and hers-
Proposing and contesting expenses.
Compensate us, or face our lawyers!
She, the Santa Anna
She
is the freshest sea I have tasted
Casting from shore, through
hills of hued skies
Gathering the oak from the western
coast
Enveloping what once were our harvest prize
Her silky frock tossed and turned everywhere
With
silver wisps shining behind
Motioned silhouette like
apparitions
As the passing words comforts in kind—
"Hello
dearest life, how are you?"
I bask in her touch so free and
lasting
"Worry not, all is well. It has come."
My
fingers open with alms in yearning
My leafy reds and orange
break and fall
While rain and sun lay in wait for her call
High School Phases
Oh
thankful day, a brand new light is here
Hopeful faces smile and
intrigue like mine
Free from worry curious without fault
The
child of which will be the next in line
Let knowledge speak for I
know much of all
As teachers teach what most have done up
'til
Think of it as this while others think otherwise
No one
understands me- my precious will
The cons hit me harsh when proof
tears my pride
I know less- foolish sakes, I must abide
To
study more, to study more- college!
My labor shall bloom as season
will ride
This is said to be the best of my youth
Ditching
and learning- adolescent youth!
Art Grows
Pretty
colors luminous with one's craft
A few strokes down: frescoes and
canvas alike
Inlays of blacks and golden proverb drawn
Made for
the history of all men to like
Metal monoliths and woven
baskets
Sprung populous intrigue like haiku cinquains
A flash
of light by machinery hands
Produced pictures disposing artistic
gains
Impressions replied with modern ideas
From dreams to
transcendence, they thought further
Industrial progression
challenged them
Thus intelligent masses could think farther
As art as art as art would be and shall
No limits will stop our
muses call
Wolves around a Sheep
Left without a friend though being amongst
Seeing
their smiles glee without consequence
I watch as greedy greens
flush each amongst
Questioning why they complain in sequence
Losing fact of other people's presence
Thinking only to think of themselves
Conversations won't connect their sentence
Producing vanity for themselves
Averting
from me just for themselves
Neglecting the setting of my open
door
Only thinking of themselves, themselves...
Taking all
that’s been mine as theirs and more
Acquaintances
are what I have close to home
Because in truth, honest friends
may never come
Once, Life was Kind
As
your sun may set in our west
Your east dawns the illuminating
sky
From the entry of open doors
We dine in honest
nicety-reply
Lending hands place the luncheon spoon to
The
empty pocket of whom once had some
Though times may change the
heart turns warm
In winter cold bringing, comes His kingdom
Upon
open windows when there's no door
Hope's breath casts in singing
the gracious song
For the sparing and kind give more in treat
To
gleam a candle from match girl's who long
This is your life and
theirs much so in part
Living it once; your sun- that golden
heart
The Snake Won’t Bite, I Hope…
There
is no room for unopened green eyes
When legitimate sparkles shine
for me
Those snakes will coil my day 'til their sun
comes
Adjourning mine own with my tears as prize
Leeching from
neck to brain, I will not see
As pride will cross over kingdoms
Tending
to the once struck hope to lose
Mending the heart's cynical
apathy
Pending discouragements and so becomes
That which
the good will birth and spruce
The
life I lived by alms…
Café D’Amor
Closing
the store after hours of work
Tuckered from busing delivering
to
"People, people," amongst them I am with
Dressed
as I am, smelling that dark brown brew
I long for us to sit once
again Miss
To kindle what was our chance to be
Hesitations
before regret today
What you, if could, would have thought about
me
Your scent allures the heat from my furnace
As a wish to
taste you presence returns
I have chocolates to share between
us
And petals for our romance to burn
Arriving to kettles
sing, I peek in
Catching a sparkle as your smile within
