Foreword
Why are we as human beings so embarrassed about some of our simple body functions? Gas and heartburn are two things that we are so embarrassed about. It brings to mind a running commercial that is on TV now for a gas medicine. The young man is in an office and a woman is interviewing him. He is fidgeting all over his chair and has this look of distress on his face. He turns from the woman and pops a gas pill in his mouth, and when he turns back around to face the woman, he now has a relaxed easy smile on his face. He is so afraid he is going to "poot" or let out a lot of wind and that he is going to be so embarrassed over this natural bodily function.
Have you ever been in a similar situation? You have a lot of gas and are in a crowded room with lots of people. You hold it as long as you can but then, all of sudden, there it goes, that loud "poot." You look around innocently as if looking for someone to blame as the room fills up with this horrendous smell. You feel as if all eyes are on you and you are so embarrassed. We are going to delve into why we have this gas and heartburn and see how we are going to cure it once and for all.
Are you suffering from frequent heartburn? Are you tired of all those ads that promise fast relief but really don't work? Have you taken a heartburn relief medicine and wondered why your heartburn keeps coming back? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you are not alone. So much of the American population is suffering daily with the horrible side effects of heartburn. Don't be embarrassed by this stomach burning, gas forming, and belching-causing condition. The best thing to cure any problem or health condition is education.
In this book, we are going to delve into misery of heartburn, its causes, its cures and why these heartburn drug companies are racking in the big bucks over your misery. We are going to study the whole digestive system, how it works, what digestion is, some natural cures and remedies for our maladies and get rid of this horrendous heartburn once and for all.
Don't be fooled. Heartburn is a serious health problem. That acid that is causing your heartburn is also eating up the lining of your stomach and esophagus, but taking all those dangerous drugs to heal your heartburn isn't the way to go about curing it forever. The drugs your doctor will prescribe for you will never cure your heartburn and are even dangerous to your overall health.
So if you are serious about curing that old nasty heartburn once and for all, let us get started with our journey down a healing road to a place where you will never have to suffer another day of that horrendous malady we call heartburn.

Let us face the facts. Our body is one huge eating machine! We are most happy when we are eating our favorite foods and drinking our special drinks that we love. We were born to eat. That is a plain and simple fact. From the time we first let out our loud wail when we are born, with our mouths in a sucking position and ready for that first delightful suck, to our last bite right before we die, we have one goal in life; to eat. In fact, we are so intent on eating in our first few years of life, that there comes a time when we look in the mirror and say "Whoa." We have eaten so much we now have a few too many pounds of fat in places we don't want it. Why is our body so intent on eating? Let us delve into the digestive system and discover what the role the tongue plays in our magnificent eating machine called the digestive system.
Digestion can be described as the chemical and mechanical process of breaking down food and its absorption. Digestion starts in our mouth with our teeth and tongue. From the time we are born, we know what to do with the tongue in our mouths. Our first instinct is to suck. Oh! We are so happy when the breast is finally presented to our little mouths and we are so content to wrap our little tongue onto the nipple and suck away as long as our mommy will let us. Have you ever watched a baby sucking his or her mother's breast? If not, the next time you get a chance; watch this miracle of eating taking place. Watch a mother cat as she nurses her babies. She looks so content and the babies are just in “cat heaven.” If you get a chance, watch a newborn as he or she is put to mommy's breast. Notice the look on both the mother's face and the babies. It is a place that speaks of pure delight. Even though we will never remember our contentment while we nursed, the wonderful urge to eat has been put into motion, and it will stay with us for the rest of our lives.
When we get a little older we start getting teeth. This is when we can really start enjoying our food. Our little teeth will start to chop and chew on more solid foods. The following list gives us a good idea how we digest our food:
1. Teeth: Chops food.
2. Salivary Gland: Makes saliva, an alkaline digestive juice.
3. Esophagus: Food passage to stomach.
4. Stomach: Churns food and adds digestive juices.
5. Liver and Pancreas: Makes digestive juices for use in the small intestine.
6. Gall Bladder: Stores bile made in liver.
7. Duodenum: Receives bile and pancreatic juice.
8. Small Intestine: Completes digestion; sends digested foods into blood stream.
9. Large intestine: Stores and finally disposes of waste.
10. Rectum: Stores waste for evacuation through the anus.
