- Chapter One –
Tahitia’s Birthday

Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom, there lived a wealthy family who had two children. The oldest daughter, Antonia, was jealous and cruel. She had a triangle of frizzy, black hair and spots that moved around her face whenever she was angry (which was most of the time.) The youngest daughter, Tahitia, was beautiful and tiny and lived way upstairs in the attic. Both her mother and sister were very mean to her.

The day dawned on Tahitia’s sixteenth birthday, but alas, there were no gifts for her. Her father, Dr. Blewitt with his poor memory had totally forgotten her birthday. He had rushed to work at his Magic Apothecary Shop that morning, glad to escape his nagging wife, Cadavia.

As she did every morning, Tahitia dressed in her sister’s hand-me-down clothes and skipped down the stairs to make breakfast.

“Happy birthday, Tahitia!” creaked the floorboard beneath her.
