Introduction
I completely appreciate how lucky I am to have a partner who is so totally accepting and open-minded to a healthy lifestyle. But it wasn't always that way. Most people are surprised to know that Mark used to be about 20kgs heavier than he is now. What changed? Everything - his pride in his body, his mindset about healthy food and a commitment to a healthy life style.
Getting married helped. We both wanted to look great for our wedding. I wrote a special guide just for women, The Raw Brides Weight Loss Plan outlining exactly what I did to lose two dress sizes for my wedding, but for Mark, it was actually a lot simpler. He followed a lot of the principles, but the groom's journey is less about the mental and more about the physical.
You may not want to take your groom on the same journey as you, but it helps if they understand what you are doing and why. After all, they will also reap the benefits of your success.
It can be hard making a lifestyle change if your partner isn’t supportive. It feels like he is undermining your efforts or making you justify everything you eat or don’t eat.
However, some grooms-to-be could use a little nudge in the right direction too. It’s their big day too and most want to look and feel better. Some of your new healthy lifestyle might rub off on them too, so this ebook is about how to motivate your man into joining you on at least some of the journey.
The worst thing you can say is “This life coach Denise used to have a tubby husband too, and now he’s really fit – you should follow her advice” or worse “I don’t want you to look fat in our wedding photos, so shape up fatty!”.
I know you won’t say anything as mean as that, but it can be hard be tactful about weight. As I mentioned, my husband Mark was extremely overweight when we first met and I never said a word, but he successfully lost the weight very quickly once he put his mind to it.
What if he is sabotaging you?
This is the man you love and are going to spend the rest of your life with. Why is he being so mean? He probably doesn’t mean it but it’s very common to feel threatened when one half of the couple starts getting fitter and healthier. He may have secret worries that you won’t find him attractive anymore or that some other caveman… I mean, guy will snatch you away.
Here are some tips to get him interested in getting fitter with you while you are getting gorgeous for the wedding.
Encouragement and praise
I hate to say it but men are vain creatures, and you can exploit that by offering compliments before he’s even done anything.
Hey – have you lost weight?
Show me your muscles – ooh, looks good!
