His parents were at it again.
“ I’m so tired of all this arguing, I wish it would just stop!” he thought to himself as he lay in bed listening to his parent’s fight. His name was Jake, Jake Deauxville. He flipped over onto his stomach, and grabbed his cell phone off of his nightstand. He opened it up and quickly typed a message to his best friend Dylan.
“Hey man they r at it again!!!” In record time a message came in and his phone dinged.
“Seriously Jake???”
“it’s the fourth time today I’m getting so pissed off.”
“Ya I know what you mean man. Do you know what they r arguing bout?”
“Nah idk wat they argue bout they r always at first.”
“Man I’m sry come over here?”
“No we both got in trouble the last time I did that. I gtg I’ll see you tomorrow morning 7am don’t 4get.”
“dnt wry I wont cya l8r.”
Jake slowly closed his eyes and as he fell asleep the dream came again, as it had every night since he turned 17. He was surrounded by nothing but darkness. He glanced around and saw nothing he had no sense of existence just an empty darkness. He noticed a purple light. Slowly the light proceeded to come closer and as it drew closer he realized that the light was a flickering purple sphere in the hand of a man with grieving eyes. The strange man pointed at Jake and the words
“ You are my hand in this world and the time is coming near when I will claim you as my own Jacob Deauxville.” and as the words thundered through his head a sharp pain spiked through Jake’s head as the purple orb floated into his body and connected with his very essence. The pain grew to an all time high and he woke up to sunlight glancing through his curtains. He laid in bed and wondered to himself for the millionth time what the dream could mean. He sighed and climbed out of bed and walked to the shower. He turned the water on and let it wash away the nights sweat from his body.
He climbed out and hurriedly got dressed and ran out to climb into his 2010 mustang and tore out of his driveway. He drove the two blocks to Dylan’s house, and sat outside his house for a few minutes before blaring his horn. Dylan came tearing out his house at a dead run with his sports bag slung over his shoulders. He jumped in the car and and threw his bag onto the floor. Jake stepped on the gas and drove the four miles to the high school.
They pulled into the school’s parking lot and they parked in the senior section, and they hurried into the school and walked into their senior year. To the sound of the school’s bell ringing. They parted ways in the science hallway. Dylan to chemistry, and Jake to A.P. Bio. As Jake walked into his first class he looked around to see who else had arrived or who else was in his class. He slowly strolled to the back of class to sit down, and as he did the football star quarterback walked into the room and waved as he sauntered over. He sat on the edge of Jake’s desk, and started talking. Normally Jake would of listened, but today he was just to occupied with his dream, and they bad feeling that he had been having ever since he had awakened. By the time the bell rang signifying the start of class only three more students had come. He sighed quietly to himself, as he realized that none of his close friends were in his class. The teacher walked in and began lecturing right away, and Jake slowly started to take notes barely paying enough attention to what she was saying to know what to write down. He started to drift in and out as the teacher turned on the overhead, and started to describe everything that she had just said. The class passed quickly and before he knew it he was awakened by the sound of the bell and quickly wrote down the homework and grabbed his book and hurried to his next class. He got to American Government aka civics a few minutes before the bell rang. A smile crossed his face as he realized that Dylan was in his class he walked over to the desk next to Dylan as quickly as he could and sat down. The two of them started talking. Soon they were laughing and joking around as the bell rang and the teacher walked in. The class stated with a patriotic song. Jake and Dylan both looked at each other and sighed as they realized that the class was going to be as boring as the both thought it would.
Jake glanced down at the transcript he was given as the teacher started to read and discuss the rules and procedures of the class. The class period started to drag by slowly and Jake and Dylan began to play of game of hangman on a scrap piece of paper the Jake had in his bag. Dylan was about to hang when the teacher walked by and tore the paper from Jake’s hand. There were enough letters on the paper that the teacher, unlike Dylan, could figure out exactly what it said. He went to the front of the class and read
“ This class makes me wish I could hang” from the paper, and all the kids laughed. He looked over at Jake and Dylan and he said
“ It looks like Dylan will not be hanging today.”
The other kids laughed again and Jake and Dylan were again left with nothing to do but be bored. There was five minutes left in class and the teacher Mr. Throne. Gave the students and assignment, which was in their own words describe what Democracy is. Jake and Dylan looked at each other and chuckled as the they quickly wrote down an answer. The bell rang and they were the first ones out of the room. They hurried to the school parking lot. They had open campus the rest of the day, so they decided to go home before swimming practice at five that afternoon.
The raced to Jake’s car and the moment that Jake’s hand touched his car the bad feeling he had all day spiked and he knew, without knowing how he knew, that if him and Dylan got into the car something bad was going to happen. He grabbed Dylan’s shoulder and hauled him back away from the car and Dylan looked at him strangely, and the fear he was feeling shone through his eyes and Dylan saw it and asked what was wrong.
“I don’t know I just have a really bad feeling about getting in the car. I think something bad is going to happen if we get in the car and drive.”
Dylan shook his head and replied
“ Man you know that’s crazy. Come on lets go home I’m hungry.”
He walked back to the car and got in, and Jake paused for a moment before he walked to the drivers door, climbed in and started the car. He slowly drove out of the parking lot being more careful than he normally would have. As nothing happened Jake started to relax, and he started laughing and joking with Dylan. They were a block from Dylan’s house when it happened. They drove through an intersection and out of no where lightning flashed and struck the road in front of the car in rapid succession. Jake slammed on the brakes, but the car just kept going as if the brakes were not even pressed down. The car slid forward, and lightning struck again this time striking the hood of the car. The electricity flashed through the car in an instant. It hit the engine and the car exploded outwards. Jake and Dylan both were thrown from the car. Jake landed in someone’s yard, but Dylan flew farther and hit the house with tremendous force. Jake slowly moved his hand to his phone, and was barely able to dial 911 he got them on the phone, and they came roaring down the street, and as they were loading Jake into the ambulance, he passed out.
The dark empty darkness was suddenly there. Jake looked around and yelled for Dylan trying to find him. The purple light came towards him again. This time he ran towards the light and came to a stop next to the man carrying the purple sphere. Jake lifted his hands and pounded on the man yelling at him to send Jake back. The man flicked his hand and Jake flew back a few feet, and when he tried to move he couldn’t.
“Don’t try and hit me Jacob Deauxville- you know nothing of what you do. It’s your fault Dylan died. I tried to warn you, but you ignored me. Your time has come to claim your birthright.”
The voice pounded through his body grinding against his bones and Jake dumbly started at the man.
“What are you talking about” Jake asked.
The man didn’t answer instead he took the remaining steps to Jake and laid his hands on either side of Jake’s head. The purple orb slowly but persistently floated it’s way into Jake’s chest, and pain exploded through his body.
“Remember I am always with you when you need help, I will be there to guide you my son, and together we shall destroy the Courtenay coven. Now, awake and claim your birthright.”
Jake opened his eyes and tried to sit up, but he couldn’t make his body move. He stopped trying and listened to what the doctor was saying to whoever was sitting on the edge of the bed.
“ he broke almost every bone in his arms and legs and he has severed his spinal cord. We don’t have high hopes that he will walk ever again I’m sorry mum.”
It was his mother Jake thought to himself than he processed what the doctor had said about how he would never walk again. Jake sucked in air and made himself sit up. The doctor and Jake’s mom gasped in shock, and the doctor said
“He shouldn’t be able to move let alone sit up!!”
Jake looked at his arms and saw luminous purple sparks leaping around his skin and slowly sink into his body. As each spark drifted in his body, he felt better and more vibrant. By the time that the last spark drifted away, he felt as if he could run a marathon easily. He swung his legs over the bed and stood up, and he thought to himself
“He I’m alright.”
“This is miraculous you shouldn’t be this healed ever again, but you healed in a matter of minutes after you became conscious- Amazing!” The doctor shouted in shocked glee.
Jake looked at him and the memories of the accident came flashing back to him.
“What happened to Dylan?” Jake whispered.
“ We don’t believe he will make it through the night, he was severely damaged and we are trying to stabilize him.” The doctor announced with a mournful look upon his face.
Jake looked at his hands, and thought to himself how it was all his fault he should have done something- listened to his conscious no matter- how crazy it was. A voice shouted in his mind
“Run, my child they have felt you and are coming.”
As quickly as the presence had came, it left, and Jake stood there, and in that moment of hesitation the wall of his room exploded and a women stepped through the hole in the wall.
She lifted up her hands and green fire-balls appeared in them and she threw them at the doctor and Jake’s mother, both of which instantly ignited into a pair of human torches. Their bloodcurdling screams rebounded around the room as they quickly burned to death. Jake was so shocked by what had happened that he didn’t know how to react. The presence came back and again the voice shouted in his mind.
“I’m not going to let you die you worthless lump. I’ve waited too long for you!”
The lady lifted her hands and threw two more green fire-balls at Jake. Jake opened up his mouth to scream, but instead of yelling he started speaking a language he didn’t recognize, but at the same time knew. A purple barrier flashed into existence a few inches from him and the fire-balls pattered against it like rain on a rain shield. Jake started to laugh and before the witch could react, more words came pouring out of his mouth and a wall of fire leapt up between him and the witch. Before she could break through it, Jake returned to his sense and ran from the room and out into the parking lot he looked around, and saw a bus. He ran and jumped aboard right before the driver took off. He sat on the bus pondering where he was going to go now. He had no doubt in his mind that his dad was also dead. All it had taken was one day to change his life forever. He started out this day with a mother a father and a best friend, and now he had nothing. He decided to go to the only place left to him- his grandma’s.
When he got there, she was at the door waiting for him, and confirmed to him that his dad was dead. He walked to her guest room and laid down and cried himself to sleep, and once again the dream came.
The empty darkness was pressing all around, but the difference this time was that the man was waiting for Jake this time.
“What did you do to me?” Jake asked vehemently.
“I did nothing besides saving your life.” The man replied into Jake’s mind.
“Than what is that damned purple sphere that always wake me up during these messed up dreams.” Jake shot back triumphantly.
“It is your families magic Jacob Deauxville, and you are me reincarnated once more to fulfill the blood vow I made with my father on his death bed. I promised him that I would kill all of the Cortenay Coven. I snuck into their castle in the dead of night with my brothers, and we put the Cortenay Castle to the torch. Killing all the men and women, the slaves, even their accursed animals, but they outwitted us. The high priestess of the Cortenay Coven discovered out plot and her daughter and granddaughter escaped in the havoc.”
The memories from his dead ancestor filled his mind as the specter told his story of how he failed.
“Now they are back and you Jacob Deauxville are the last of my lineage. You must destroy them, so our family can finally live in peace.” the specter finished with a sigh.
“I’ll do it!” Jake said with great conviction.”
“But how will I learn what I must to beat them because that little women almost took me out.” Jake said embarrassment coating his voice.
“When you wake up, there will be a book with human skin as a cover and stamped into the cover will be a fox with a holly in its mouth. It is our family crest. Good luck Jacob Deauxville the last of the Deauxville Coven.”
These words thundered through Jake’s mind as the specter faded out of reality, and Jake was left in the darkness with nothing but the purple sphere to keep him company. He slowly flicked his hand and the sphere floated towards him. Jake chuckled quietly to himself and the sphere shook as If it too was laughing. He thought to himself
“how do I get out of here.”
The sphere shook and he looked at it and remembered. Jake flicked his hand towards his stomach, and the purple sphere floated towards his chest, and halted for a minute before it slowly sunk in. Jake stood there for a minute waiting for the pain to come, but it didn’t. he waited for a few moments before he asked
“Now what do I do?”
The sphere spread itself throughout Jake’s body and the pain started, but it was more centralized on his wrist, and he suddenly awakened drenched in sweat. He clenched his wrist as the pain continued. The pain gradually started to fade away, and when it was finally gone he sat up and looked for the book. He found it on the dresser next to his bed just as his ancestor had told him he would. He reached for the book and gasped in shock, as he saw the fox holding a holly plant in it’s mouth engraved in his wrist in a brilliant purple color. He examined it next to the books and it was an exact copy down to the precise curve of the fox’s tail.
