DEDICATION

As much as I would love to dedicate this book to just one individual client for whom I have made a change in their life, I cannot just single out one person. So many people have sat in front of me all with different goals, aspirations, backgrounds and desires. Each of them had one common factor. They wanted to change who they were for the better.

The amount of time I spent with a client was never a concern to me. Although some gyms wanted new clients in front of you every hour, learning about a person took longer than that, whether I was getting paid or on my own time what mattered most was that the person in front of me had enough time to explain what they wanted to achieve. My first reward was knowing that when that person got up from my desk they were more knowledgeable than when they first sat down and were now armed with the tools they needed to start their new healthy lifestyle.

I dedicate this book to all of you who at first sat down in front of me, were nervous about telling me what it was you wanted to achieve, scared to talk, embarrassed, thought your dreams were just that dreams and could never become reality and even some of you who cried and thought there was no hope left.

Knowing what you have learned and having held your hand to turn what seemed to be only a dream and make it a reality was the best payment I could have ever received.

I know the road for many of you was not easy and like I tell all of my clients this is going to be about sweat, tears, emotions and hard work but in the end it will all be worth it. The change you all had to make in your life was not a temporary one but rather a life changing journey. Everyone one of my clients from the first time we sat down, even those who could not afford to have training left my desk with my email address and cell phone number. From phone calls to emails to text messages at two in the morning asking me if you should have cheesecake or wine! To other text message about eating ants on a log which I found out later on were actually raisins on top of peanut butter smeared on celery (who knew)! No those texts and emails and phone calls never made me upset or angry they let me know that you were consciously thinking about what you were doing. To be totally honest it was an honor to me as a personal trainer to know you put that level of trust in me and felt comfortable enough to share that with me. I do not think there is a profession out there that could ever be as rewarding as this one is. From sharing personal details to dreams and aspirations to life experiences that made you happy and those that made you cry. From watching my clients pass out from exhaustion to giving me a high five and a hug when their session was over for that day. It is each and every one of you that gave me the desire to wake up each and every morning and do what I do best and to write yet another book.

Thank you to all of my past and present clients for allowing me to help you achieve your goals, for trusting in me and letting me walk this road with you. For sharing all your tears, sweat, smiles, hugs, sadness and joy and most of all your dreams with me

This book is dedicated to all of you!

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

On a daily basis I encounter new members coming into a gym setting that have never stepped into a health club before. The sheer intimidation alone of hearing men grunting as they pick up heavy weights combined with hundreds of intimidating pieces of futuristic machines would make it confusing to almost anyone.

Put all of that to the side and imagine if you will still being talked into that gym membership. The pretty petite front end girl scans your card and says to you enjoy your workout.

In the back of your mind you are probably thinking but where do I begin. Is there anyone here to show me what to do? Do not get me wrong most gyms these days do offer personal trainer but of course for an additional fee.

No book is going to be able to give you the life knowledge and lessons learned that a certified professional can devote to you one on one. Would I love to be your trainer? Yes I would and if you live close enough to me than that is awesome. Case and point however being just this: before choosing a trainer make sure you do some research on their background. There are many online personal trainer courses for two hundred dollars that have the answers listed on a search engine. Make sure the trainer you choose has gone to a reputable school, ask for references and check with their current as well as previous clients. Any good trainer will be happy to give you references because they have taken a person to a place they never before thought they would be. The same holds true for any client of a trainer they will be more than happy to brag about their accomplishments.

1 Muscle equals metabolism

Metabolism we have all heard of the word but do we actually know what it means? By definition it is the chemical processes occurring within a living cell or organism that are necessary for the maintenance of life. In metabolism some substances are broken down to yield energy for vital processes while other substances, necessary for life, are synthesized. The definition simplified basically means that metabolism is the rate of speed at which our body burns fat. Now if we take and increase our metabolism what are we going to indeed be doing? Burning fat! The goal we are going to achieve is to turn our bodies into a fat burning machine.

Now that we know what metabolism is we need to incorporate another factor into this equation, that factor is adding lean muscle mass to your body. How do we do that? We do this by strength training. Strength training is a method of improving muscular strength by gradually increasing the ability to resist force through the use of free weights, machines, or a person's own body weight.

Strength training sessions are designed to impose increasingly greater resistance, which in turn stimulates development of muscle strength to meet the added demand. By strength training we add what we call lean muscle to our bodies. Now I know what some of you reading this are probably thinking, I do not want to be bulky and that is fine. This book is not intended to make you bulky it is intended to give you that lean sculpted look that you so desire. The look of a hard ripped, sculpted body. Let’s take a look at a diagram of how this works:

So let us take a quick example. If I said to you we are going to add one pound of lean muscle to your body, did you know your body with just having one pound of lean muscle added will burn fifty calories a day and that is at rest? By rest I do not mean just sleeping I am talking about driving in your car, watching television, talking on your phone and yes even sleeping. Fifty calories a day big deal right? Now let’s say that we add ten pounds of lean muscle to your body from your shoulders to your calves because we must remember we can spot train where we can add muscle to your body but we can not spot train where to lose fat. I will get into that a little later in the book. Let us get back to our ten pounds of lean muscle. We add ten pounds of lean muscle and your body is going to burn an amazing five hundred calories a day, no magic diet pills here folk’s just cold hard facts. Let us take a moment and figure out the math here.
