Introduction

More than likely you have heard about superfoods, as the topic has received a good deal of attention in recent years. However, there is often some confusion as to what a superfood is or isn't. Much of that confusion stems from the fact that people hear the word "super" and assume that a superfood must somehow be very unusual, hard to eat or difficult to prepare. Yet, the fact is that most superfoods are foods you are already familiar with and have likely eaten before. The vast majority of superfoods are not at all "mysterious" or "strange," but are common foods that you already are familiar with, such as apples and spinach.

So exactly what are superfoods then? Superfoods are foods that are packed with nutrition or other health promoting benefits. In this regard not all foods are created equal, as some foods have enough nutrition in contrast to their calories to earn the title "superfood." As you will see throughout the course of this book, some superfoods are very unexpected and may even leave you a little surprised. Keep this fact in mind: superfoods are foods that can have a profound impact on your health, vitality, well-being and even your longevity. It is also important to keep in mind that not all superfoods work in the body in exactly the same way. Some superfoods made our list because they are nutrient dense while others, such as garlic, make the list because they are simply packed with helpful compounds that are likely to positively impact health.
