INTRODUCTION

Randy “Macho Man” Savage was hands down one of the greatest and unusual wrestlers in the history of professional wrestling. But his name and talents transcended the wrestling ring. He was one of those few performers that truly became a household name.

Randy Savage had millions of fans and I was one of his biggest. Those of us who followed him have so many memories to share. This book is about my own memories--his epic battles in Madison Square Garden, his unforgettable moments at countless WrestleManias, his life after wrestling, his final years of transition into regular life and the days following his 2011 death. Even if you are a Randy Savage fan with different memories than those I possess, you are certain to appreciate these moments of “Macho Madness.”

One also does not have to be a wrestling fan to enjoy this book. It is for all that enjoy reading about unusual people who work in hard to make it bigger than life, tell amazing stories and capture the imagination of millions of people.

FIRST NIGHT IN THE GARDEN

Tuesday, November 24th, 1987 –– On the surface it appeared to be just another school day. I was just 14 years old. My teachers were talking about math, science, English and social studies. We even had gym that day, and that was always fun. But the only thing my friends and I were talking about was our much anticipated journey to New York City later that night. We could not wait to get to the heart of midtown Manhattan where the World Wrestling Federation would appear at Madison Square Garden, dubbed the ‘World’s Most Famous Arena.’

It was difficult to get my dad to take me to the city to see wrestling. He had only taken me once before in July of 1986. It’s not that he didn't love it, but my mom had died a few years earlier and he was still having difficulty dealing with the aftermath of the long battle we all shared together as a family. Sometimes it was just hard to get him out of the house to enjoy a fun night out.

I certainly wanted to go to see wrestling with my dad, but I was also getting to the age at which teens can start doing things and attending big events independently with their friends. So, just as I would do when I wanted see a New York Mets game at the old Shea Stadium, I hopped on a bus with my friends and headed to the big city. The ‘Red and Tan Lines’ bus trip always seemed like it took forever but, in reality, it was just a 90 minute ride from the Spring Valley Bus Terminal in Rockland County, New York, through the various suburbs of northern New Jersey and into New York City’s Port Authority.

I know it may be hard to believe it now, but it was not always an easy task to walk around the Port Authority and head south to the Garden – – old MSG. Pushy drug dealers and hustlers of all sorts really were always trying to get us to see, do, be or buy something. But we were 14 year old suburban boys, and all we wanted to see, do or be a part of was the World Wrestling Federation. So we simply acted as if we were bulletproof and pushed through all of the madness as we made our way to the arena.
