DEDICATION

For my mother (B. January 23, 1950 – D. February 20, 2011). You were always ready to pursue your dreams and to do the work necessary to achieve them – thank you for being my inspiration. I love you.

INTRODUCTION

This is a short book describing styles that I have created or modified for use with twists formed from natural hair. Note that although these styles have been done on hair styled in two-strand twists, many of the featured styles can be done on hair of all types and textures. I want to give people more styling options for their natural hair whether it is in two-strand twists, braids, locs, or loose. Each hairstyle has written text to provide instruction on achieving the look shown herein. I hope you enjoy the book, and that you will find it to be useful in your hair journey.

The photos used in this book were taken over the course of several months. Some pictures were taken on new twists, but the majority of styles were not. Many of the photos of the variations are candid shots, and are provided herein to give you an idea of how the style could look. You will need elastic bands (ponytail holders), hair pins, and a banana clip to complete these styles. I believe that the styles included in the book can be completed by people of all skill levels. I do not give braiding instructions but I do give instructions on how to complete basic buns, various types of bangs, Bantu knots and French rolls. I hope that the photos and instructions are clear, but please email info@naturallytwistedhairstyles.com if you have questions.

MAINTENANCE

If your hair is in two-strand twists, I recommend that you: keep your hair tied in a silk or satin scarf/bonnet or on a satin pillowcase while sleeping; co-wash your twists every week; shampoo as needed; deep condition your twists; spritz your twists with water and oil or a leave-in conditioner every day; redo your edges as needed, that would generally include re-twisting the very first row of twists from ear to ear every week to ten days; and finally, if you intend to keep your twists in longer than several weeks, please re-twist all of your hair section by section over the course of a few days to avoid any major knotting.
