Introduction
So, you've decided to publish your own manuscript. Wonderful! Soon you’ll be joining forces with authors from around the world who--just like you--have opted to take control of their future at a time when “getting published” has never been easier or faster than by using the print-on-demand technologies that are available today.
But what's someone considering this unconventional route to do: just publish on their own or use one of the fee-based print-on-demand service companies?
Well, either way it’s a big decision but it’s also something an author has to figure out before they go any farther because as with most types of book publication, both Independent and Self-Publishing have their own positives and negatives.
What's the Difference?
First, let's define the key difference regarding the Independent and traditional Self-publishing models which is: Control of the ISBN.
For those unfamiliar with the term, an ISBN, or “International Standard Book Number,” is a ten (soon to be thirteen) digit number acquired from the United States ISBN Agency through the main U.S. agent established specifically for this purpose, R.R. Bowker. (Note: Other countries have their own ISBN regulating agencies.)
