With today’s population and the integration of a multi-cultural society, the need to acquire information about an individual or business has exploded--but certainly not without controversy. With a multi-cultural society came an undercurrent of control, a fight for equality, and a tolerance for misconduct--if such misconduct was deemed necessary to acquire control and equality. The reorganization of the laws that shape our conduct toward our relationships to each other has become crucial. We must answer the questions, “Who is our neighbor?” “Who is our business associate?” “Who is our employee?” or “Who is the person we might marry?” These have become the big questions to be answered before hiring an employee or a baby sitter, before choosing a life partner or any intimate associate. Related to these questions is identity theft—an expensive crime necessitating, for example, the expenditure of millions of dollars on the part of employers to check out potential employees.
