A NO-BODY

A Fantasy, Told By Various Facets Of The Author's Schizophrenic Imagination

There are times when it is necessary to question what is real or, to paraphrase that, to speculate upon the nature of reality. An event may happen and its happening may be witnessed, but is the image in the mind of the witness a reflection of the reality of the event? Indeed, can it be relied upon at all, and if so to what extent?

An event may happen, its happening may be witnessed and it may take its place in the public consciousness through the media's interpretation of the witness's recollection.

What follows is an example, set for the author's convenience in an obscure corner of North Wales. If you don't know the area you'll find it on Google maps. It is up to you, the reader, to decide what, if anything, happened and, if it did, whether the outcome was equitable, given the circumstances as you, uniquely, understand them.

As is normal for most if us, you will learn of events through the pages of newspapers. There is the 'Holywell Advertiser', a publication that follows the style of the 'red top' tabloids, the 'North Wales Times', which is an altogether more serious periodical, and 'The Commentary', a serious national newspaper published in London.

Let us begin the story as it might have appeared in these publications from the day that it broke.

'BODY' FOUND ON HALKYN MOUNTAIN

by George Walker

Late on Saturday evening a dead body was discovered by a passer-by, laying on a rock some way from the public highway.

The finder, who declines to be named, claims that he was walking home across country when he saw a body on a rock. He asserts that the body was that of a man, fully clothed but cold with no discernible signs of life.

A police patrol car arrived at the scene some time later; the officers had no difficulty in locating the site but found no dead body. The rock did however show a number of fresh scratch marks, suggesting that something had occurred in the very recent past.

Police officers have interviewed the finder at his home, from where he made the call alerting them to the presence of the body. No further details have yet been released but the police are appealing for anyone with any knowledge of this incident to come forward.

DEAD BODY GOES WALKABOUT!

By Jimmy Harris

When the police are told there's a dead body you'd normally expect them not to lose it. But that seems to be what's happened up on the Halkyn.

There it was, a dead male, on a rock. But when the police got there it had gone. It's a mystery – was the man still alive, or did somebody take the corpse away?
