Introduction
Here is a down and dirty list of Master /slave lifestyle terms and definitions to help you better understand the lifestyle you have entered. Most of the definitions are based on loose definitions from Wikipedia and the Random House Unabridged Dictionary, Copyright © 1997, by Random House, Inc., or Infoplease as reference points.
These definitions and articles are used in context with the Master Slave and Dominant Submissive lifestyles including my comments in italics. The terms he will be used to represent dominant or master and she will be used to represent submissive or slave. If you are a female dominant or a male submissive I believe you are smart enough to follow along. This is done in the interest of saving space, when a term is gender specific it will be clearly stated.
Just to be clear, this is a master slave dictionary written for masters and slaves to better communicate and understand terms in our lifestyle, not a dominant submissive dictionary that is all inclusive.
Terms in one lifestyle do not always translate to other lifestyles and when witting the master’s handbook and the slave’s handbook, I ran into a lot of terms that mean one thing in one lifestyle and something totally different in another. Because of my OCD I needed to finish this to make it easier for the handbooks. Terms like tops and bottoms until the 80’s was exclusively a gay term that has filtered into BDSM and now I am seeing it try to filter into our lifestyle. We have our own terms and reasons for the terms being different as you will learn from the handbooks. Some terms have cropped up because of the internet; either because people can’t spell the word Dominatrix or invent the word Domme to show that it is a female dominant. These people are not stupid they are just ignorant of the proper terms.

1 to 10
This system is used during a scene to verbalize the intensity of an activity the slave is experiencing or the intensity of contact the slave is ready to receive. Almost like a safe word but it is a question posed by the master rather than initiated by the slave. A check to see how the slave is doing so you, as the master, can better gage your play session and the slave can get ahead of any stress.
24/7
24/7 is an abbreviation which stands for "24 hours a day, 7 days a week", usually referring to being in the lifestyle at all times without interruption.
Don’t allow yourself to be misled by this term. It does not mean that you are in full lifestyle gear. 24/7 means that your lifestyle is lived all day and night. There will be times when you have to deal with work, the kids, your neighbors, and family. You still own your slave or you are still owned by your master. That ownership does not end just because you are reading a bedtime story to your kids, or going to work.
911 or 999
The emergency telephone number. If you are in America and Canada the number is 911 if you live in the UK the number is 999 the rest of European Union, 112 if you need to dial this number your slave is in trouble. Masters don’t make this call because we are perfect. Okay maybe not perfect but we don’t make mistakes that require that level of help.
A
Abrasion
Using something rough (such as sandpaper) has a soothing effect on some people. Caution should be used as abrasion can cause scaring. See scarification.
AC/DC
A person that goes both ways, also known as a Bisexual.
Aftercare
The time after a scene, or play session in which the participants calm down. Discuss what they remember of the scene events and their personal reactions to them, and slowly bring your slave back in touch with reality. Intense play often involves an endorphin high and very intense experience, and failure to engage in proper aftercare can lead to subdrop as these return to more normal everyday levels.
Aftershocks
Orgasms that sneak up on you after heavy sessions of bliss. Depending on the level of bliss, it can last as much as 96 hours after the play session has ended.
Ageplay
Usually referring to daddy/daughter or mommy/baby role play. Does not usually include or imply aspects of incest, but rather the nurturing relationship of parent/child or teacher/student.
Alternative Lifestyle
A term used to describe someone's preference to living outside the 'normal' constraints of society. This term is used by persons who are involved in Master slave, D/s, swinging, gay or lesbian, etc.
Anal beads
A string of beads inserted into the anus and pulled out during orgasm. Anal beads resemble a string of pearls or beads ranging in size from small to large which are meant to be inserted into the anal cavity. The purpose is to pull the string out slowly one bead at a time for small orgasms and for a major orgasm pull the entire string out enhancing the orgasms.
Anal intercourse, Anal sex
Sex involving the insertion of the penis or some other body part or object into the anus, also called Greek' way" or Greek' love'. All kinds of lube are used the best are water based lubricants.
Anal play
Sexual play that involves stimulation of the outer rim of the anus and/or penetration of the rectum; includes rimming and fingering. Also called ass play.
Analingus, anilingus
Anilingus (from anus & lingus (Latin Lingere: to lick), less commonly spelled analingus), also referred to or described as anal–oral contact or anal–oral sex, a form of oral sex involving contact between the anus or perineum of one person and the mouth (lips) or tongue of another. Slang terms frequently used are rimming or rim-job. It can be performed by people of all sexual orientations and, depending upon the context in which it is performed, it may be used for personal pleasure or as a form of erotic humiliation. Oral sex performed on the anus. Cleanliness is even more of an issue with analingus than with traditional oral sex because of the high risk of infection and disease.
Animal Play
The sub acts or dresses like an animal (puppy, pony, kitten, etc.).
Anus
The opening between the buttocks through which you poop and can have anal sex. Also known as the "ass hole".
Arm-binders
A shoulder to finger tip restraint used in bondage.
Asphyxiation
This is a form of edge play. The master causes a lack of oxygen by smothering, choking, or similar means; see Breath play. (VERY DANGEROUS edge play.)
A-Spot
At the deepest point on the anterior (front) wall of the vagina, located between the cervix and the bladder, is the Anterior fornix erogenous zone, or A-Spot. It is described as having a wrinkly texture similar to the tip of the nose.
Auctioned off
Dominant auctions off the slave to the highest bidder (usually supervised and for temporary use) most commonly used in charity events.
Autoeroticism
Autoeroticism is the practice of stimulating oneself sexually. The term was popularized toward the end of the 19th century by British sexologist Havelock Ellis. The most common autoerotic practice is masturbation, and the two terms are often used as synonyms, although masturbation can also occur with a partner.
Avant Garde
Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard". The adjective form is used in English to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. Avant-garde represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm. Within the lifestyle community these people are the next generation. They are the ones that bring in new ideas. To the old guard they are reinventing the wheel but it is the new ideas that keep what we do fresh and different.
B
B&D
The abbreviation of the words Bondage and Discipline. This is not to be confused with BDSM, B&D; pain is a tool for correcting improper actions by the slave. In B&D, no actual injury occurs, or should occur. The practice of B&D is to bind and then punish the slave for an offence real or created to give the illusion of the slave doing something wrong. The master disciplines the slave with the use of pain or humiliation. Sex is optional since both master and slave enjoy and become aroused by the actions. Most often used in role play.
B.O.B.
Battery Operated Boyfriend. See vibrator.
Bad pain
Good pain and bad pain refer to pleasant vs. unpleasant pain. As a "vanilla" example, imagine soreness after a good workout at the gym versus the pain of breaking a leg. Enjoying the sting of a cane is good pain, while being hit in the head with a hammer would be bad pain.
Ball play
The erotic manipulation of the testicles and scrotum; this play can range from caring to brutal. Such scenes can involve bondage, piercing, weighting, stretching, tickling, slapping, castration, and other activities that deal with that area.
Bareback
Having sex without a condom, used especially for anal sex.
Barebacking simply feels better, is more enjoyable, and is more pleasurable, than protected anal intercourse. But then there is the risk of STD’s so you have to weigh the risks and benefits of bare back riding.
Bastinado
The act of striking or whipping of the bottoms of the feet with a rod, cane, riding crop or similar object. This is more a B&D or S&M activity because of the heavy pain involved.
BDSM
Short for "Bondage and Discipline, Sadism and Masochism." A catch-all term for a broad array of sexual practices, especially involving restraint and inflicting pain. These are tools used by people in mM/s.
Bell Dancing
Attaching bells or other noise making items to the skin with the use of temporary piercing or sutures. Once attached the person begins moving to cause them to sound. Or whipped with the idea of the slave being so still as to now cause the bells to ring.
Ben Wa balls
Ben Wa balls, also known as Burmese bells, Benoît balls, Orgasm balls or Geisha balls "vagina ball", are small, marble-sized metal balls, usually hollow and containing a small weight that rolls around used for sexual stimulation (by insertion into the vagina or anus). Some may also be solid, or contain clappers or chimes within. Other larger versions made of plastic encasing lesser balls are called Duotone balls. They are used by inserting them into the vagina or anus and using muscles to hold them in, and movement to stimulate and vibrate.
Ben Wa balls may also be used to simply increase the strength of the pelvic floor muscles, much as the Taoist practice The Deer Exercise has been used for centuries, and the Kegel exercises are used today. Similar to Kegel exercises, Ben Wa balls and other shaped vaginal weights are recommended by gynecologists and obstetricians to increase vaginal elasticity and bladder control.
Practitioners of such spiritual traditions as Tantra and Chinese Taoism believe that Ben Wa Balls are helpful tools to exercise control and to explore the sensual side of an individual.
Bestiality
Sexual interest or sexual acts with animals; ZOOPHILIA.
Better too little than too much
The unwritten rule of masters, when playing with someone new to the scene or new to each other that means that it is better to end the scene while still wanting more than to end it regretting doing to much.
Bisexual
A person that enjoys sex with both men and women. As opposed to homosexual, someone who has sexual interest in the same sex, and heterosexual, someone with sexual interest in the opposite sex. The slang term is AC/DC.
Black Bull
A term used for black men that have sex with white married women. In the lifestyle black bulls are masters that cuckold the slave’s husband.
Black Bull Party
Sex orgies made up of black men and white women.
Black sheet party
An orgy for people into lifestyle sex. Also see play party.
Black snake
A completely flexible single-tail whip.
Blindfolds
A device used to block the slave from seeing. This is used to prevent the slave from seeing what is happening during the play or scene. Also used in sensory deprivation.
Bliss
That very special place the slave enters when he/she totally trusts his/her master, and totally immerses in an intense scene. The slave will not be capable of making rational decisions about safety and well-being at this point. A "natural high" that a slave gets during an intense scene as erogenous zones are manipulated by the master to cause more intense orgasms in rapid succession until it becomes one long orgasm that will last until the master stops. The slave may feel disconnected from time, space, and their body, and may have limited ability to communicate. It is critical that the master take responsibility for the slave and be aware of the slave’s wellbeing until the slave is fully back to normal and motor function and cognitive abilities return. The period after orgasm (known as a refractory period) is often a relaxing experience, attributed to the release of the neurohormones oxytocin and prolactin. Male and female brains demonstrate similar changes during orgasm (by partner controlled orgasm), with brain activity scans showing a temporary decrease in the metabolic activity of large parts of the cerebral cortex with normal or increased metabolic activity in the limbic areas of the brain.
Blood play
Lifestyle play that involves blood, including cutting and piercing.
The people who participate in blood sports have bodies that are lined with scars this all falls under edge play and thrill seeking.
Blood sports
The deliberate breaking of the skin during an S&M scene to cause the issue of blood. Play involving cutting, piercing, heavy caning or flogging, etc. are included. This type of scene requires extreme safety techniques to protect all parties from the possibility of spreading/contracting diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, and other blood-hosted viruses.
Blow job, also blowjob
Oral sex performed on a man; fellatio, or oral sex preformed on a woman; cunnilingus. In case you are not aware this is the act of putting the genitals of your partner in your mouth, or you put your genitals in your partner’s mouth. I stress this because some people think it un-masterly to give head to their slave. If you feel that way that is fine but either way it does not diminish you as a master.
Blue balls
Blue balls is a slang term for the condition of temporary fluid congestion (vasocongestion) in the testicles and prostate region, sometimes accompanied by acute testicular pain, caused by prolonged and unsatisfied sexual arousal in the human male theory. The term is thought to have originated in the United States, first appearing in 1916. Some urologists call the condition "epididymal hypertension". Only a select amount of males have the condition, not a universal condition among males. When a man has an erection for a long period of time without ejaculating; this can cause a swollen, painful feeling in the testicles. This I believe can lead to ED, see ED.
Body Modification
Body modification (or body alteration) is the deliberate altering of the human body for any non-medical reason, such as aesthetics, sexual enhancement, a rite of passage, and religious reasons, to display group membership or affiliation, to create body art, shock value, or self expression. In its most broad definition it includes plastic surgery, socially acceptable decoration (e.g., common ear piercing in many societies), and religious rights of passage (e.g., circumcision in a number of cultures), as well as the modern primitive movement.
Body worship
The act in which the slave is allowed to touch, kiss, suck, lick, or otherwise stimulate, a part of the master’s body. This is usually an act of reward, though can also be a form of humiliation.

Bondage
Bondage is the Act involving the physical restraint of a partner. This is a physical state of subjection to a master. Bondage is a tool used by the master to restrict the movement of, or to immobilize the slave. Binding is sometimes used for correction, but mostly used for pleasure, depending on the particular M/s or D/s relationship. Bondage typically refers to total restraint; however it can be limited to a particular body part, such as breast bondage.
Boot slave
A slave whose sole purpose, is to care for the master’s fetish footwear.
Boot worship
The reward granted to a slave with a boot fetish in which the slave shows admiration to the master by kissing, rubbing, riding, and/or otherwise manipulating the master’s boot.
Bottom
1. The submissive person in homosesual master slave activity, the opposite of a top. A person involved in the scene that has masochistic tendencies and gives control over only during a scene. Though part of the lifestyle as a whole, there are no bottoms in M/s or D/s.
2. The one who is penetrated during anal sex, especially between gay males, again the opposite of top. Heterosexuals are not tops or bottoms they are either dominant or submissive or master or slave. Bottom is a gay term and those that claim to be bottoms either are misinformed or have no clue what they are doing, yes I know that for the last few decades people have started calling themselves bottoms but it does not change the facts. Bottom Drop

Boundaries
Limits outlined and agreed upon by the parties involved during negotiations of a BDSM scene or master slave relationship.
Boy
A term used to describe a bottom or submissive who relates to the Dominant in a parent/ child role play. A boy can be a natural male or a female who relates to the male gender. Some butch females prefer to use an'i' instead of the 'y' resulting in the term 'boi'.
Branding
Branding is the final stage of ownership. A branding iron is made when the slave agrees to serve the master for life. The brand is the master’s mark that is burned into the flesh of the slave to mark the master’s property.
Branding, Cautery
This is a less common form of branding that uses a thermal cautery tool with a heated wire tip to cause the burns.
Branding, Cold
This rare method of branding is the same thing as strike branding, except that the metal branding tool is subjected to extreme cold (such as liquid nitrogen) rather than extreme heat. This method will cause the hair on the brand to grow back white and will not cause keloiding. This is best for Asian and African races.
Branding, Laser
"Laser" branding is a marketing term coined by Steve Haworth, who pioneered its use in body modification. The technical term is "electrocautery branding". Though it is technically possible to use a medical laser for scarification, this term refers not an actual laser, but rather an electrosurgical/electrocautery unit which uses electricity to cut and cauterize the skin, similar to the way an arc welder works. Electro-cautery branding vaporizes the skin so precisely and so quickly that little to no heat or damage to the surrounding skin is caused. This means that pain and healing time after the scarification is complete is greatly lessened.
Branding, Strike
Similar to the process used to brand livestock; a piece of metal is heated and pressed onto the skin for the brand. Historically it was used to claim ownership of slaves or to punish criminals, but as a form of body art, strike branding is less preferable to other types because it is not precise and tends to spread greatly on healing, and is not advisable for curved areas of the body. More successful is the multi-strike brand, done piece by piece rather than all at once. For example, to get a V-shaped brand, two lines would be burned separately by a straight piece of metal, rather than by a V-shaped piece of metal.
Brat
The term used to describe a submissive that takes on the persona of a rebellious child. Being a brat in a scene is acceptable; being a brat when not negotiated is looked down upon. Masters don’t have brats. If you like your slaves bratty, that is your fetish, but masters are in control and brats can’t survive long with a master in their life. So says my slave, a former brat.
Breast Bar
A bondage device that consists of two pieces of wood and a couple screws. The breasts are squeezed in between, and then the screws are tightened. Also called a breast press.
Breast bondage
The act of tying female breasts so that they are either flattened against the chest or so that they don’t bulge. Another form of breast bondage is tying each breast so they stand out from the body.
Breath Control
The master controls the slave’s breathing during heavy scenes. This is important in intense scenes such as bliss in order to keep the slave healthy.
Breath play
Restricting airflow, by strangulation, suffocation, this is edge play and should not be done without a lot of study and practice under the watchful eye of a master or at least a mentor.
Brown showers
A form of 'scat' play that involves one person defecating on other person in an erotic manner.
Bugger, buggery
Anal Sex, especially anal sex performed by a man on a man or woman. This term as been expanded to mistresses who use a strap on dildo on their slaves.
Butch
Possessing traditionally masculine appearance, attributes and behaviors. Butch is a polite term for dyke in most circles. Often used to describe the masculine gay men or women, the opposite of femme or fluff.
Butt fucking
See anal sex.
Butt plug
A sex toy designed for anal penetration that has a flared base. Usually smaller than a typical dildo and not shaped like a penis. Much like a dildo, but pear-shaped with a flared base, the flared base prevents the plug from being lost in the anal cavity; the pear shape helps hold the plug in place.The smallest butt plugs are about the size of a slender finger, which should be an easy fit for even the most butt-shy. Butt plugs have many uses some for torture and others for pleasure. It all depends on how you as the master choose to use them. Butt plug: They come in a variety of sizes; some can vibrate.
C
Candle Wax
Candle wax is used as a torture tool, as well as an erotic tool. Although in the movies you see them using candles to torture the slave, the choice of wax is important when using this tool. Paraffin wax should be used because it has a lower melting temperature than non-paraffin wax. The lower temperature reduces the risk of causing burns on the slave. If you cannot find paraffin candles then adjust the height of the candle when you drip the wax this will allow the wax to cool a bit before it comes in contact with the skin of the slave.
Cane
Usually this refers to a thin reed stalk called a cane but now also included synthetic materials. The cane is a harsh punishment tool used in B&D, Discipline, and S&M. In the hands of a master can cause unbelievable pain or sweet orgasmic joy. In the hands of a novice can cause serious injury and possibly death. Mastering the cane will take a while so don’t rush into it.
Cane, Bamboo
In bamboo, the internodal regions of the stem are hollow and the vascular bundles in the cross section are scattered throughout the stem instead of in a cylindrical arrangement. This makes the cane strong and light, its sting is unique. It needs lots of care and maintenance but worth the trouble.
Cane, Evil
Fiberglass in construction, it makes an evil sound as it swishes through the air and stings much more intense than other canes. These canes can shatter leaving shards of fiberglass all over the place (slave included). Care must be taken when using this toy.
Cane, Lexan
Is a polycarbonate polymer, Lexan is the brand name for polycarbonate sheet and resin in a wide range of grades. Common usages include space and sports helmets, clear high performance windshields, aircraft canopies, and bullet resistant windows. I say all that to say this, through the years I had broken every form of cane on one slave or another. Master Stu gave me a cane made of lexan that has lasted me fifteen years. It is easy to clean and care for.
Cane, Rattan
Rattans are also superficially similar to bamboo. Unlike bamboo, rattan stems ("malacca") are solid, and most species need structural support and cannot stand on their own. This is the common material for a cane but they require lots of care and maintenance.
Cat
See Cat-o-nine tails.
Catheterization
The insertion of a small sterile tube into the urethra.
Cat-O'nine-Tails
Cat-o-nine tails a whip that has multiple tails that are usually braided or beaded. These whips produce a very sharp stinging sensation, unlike the heavy thud of a flogger.
Chains
Used like rope the chain is used to restrain a slave for the purpose of bondage or to keep the slave immobile for pain. Care should be taken with chains as they can pinch and tear the skin. Try not to let the chains get in direct contact with the skin.
Chastity
A form of erotic sexual denial or orgasm denial whereby a slave is prevented from access to, or stimulation of, their genitals, save at the whim or choice of their master. usually by means of a that prevents contact and is controlled by means of a lock and the master.
Chastity Devices
These items include chastity belts made of leather, nylon and metal. They are worn like panties and are locked into place to prevent masturbation as well as sexual intercourse of any kind. (Sometimes for men a cock cage) Another chastity device is having the slaves labia pierced with rings and a padlock to attach the rings to prevent vaginal sex but allows the slave to pee.
Chattel slavery
Chattel slavery, so named because people are treated as the personal property of an owner and are bought and sold as commodities, is the traditional form of slavery. It is the least prevalent form of slavery today.
Chicken hawk
Someone who is attracted to significantly younger sex partners. Usually a term used for gay men that like young boys. Females are called cougars.
Clamps
Clamps include any pinching device, usually clothes pins made of wood, but also plastic and metal, but also alligator clips and clover clamps. This is a simple device that requires a lot of care. Most clamps use a spring to work them; the springs are not all the same which means that not all the clothes pins will pinch the same. Some are stronger than others so you need to test each and every clothes pin and mark them so you know the strong mild and weak pins. This way you can adjust the amount of pain you give your slave.
Clamps, alligator
Called an alligator clamp because of the teeth and the long shape of the clamp. Care should be used in removing them as the teeth can tear skin.
Clamps, clover
Also called Japanese clover claps. These clamps are designed to squeeze tighter as they are pulled.
Clamps, endurance
A painful clamp with a strong spring, used to increase the tolerance and stamina of the slave.
Clamp, Tweezer Style, Nipple
They resemble tweezers with a ring that slides down to adjust the pinch and fit.
Clean
Not having a sexually transmitted disease, especially AIDS. The question "Are you clean?" is not referring to your state of cleanliness. Rather, it refers to whether you have a potential to be diseased. If at any time you feel unsure go to a doctor and get tested.
Climax
Another word for orgasm.
Clit
The abbreviation for the word clitoris.
Clit torture
A form of play involving manipulation of the female genitals. These areas are very sensitive and do not require heavy contact to produce an extreme sensation.
Clitoris
The female sexual organ located at the top front of the vulva that, when stimulated, becomes hard just like a penis and produce a clitoral orgasm. The clitoris is a sexual organ that is present only in female mammals. In humans, the visible button-like portion is located near the anterior junction of the labia minora, above the opening of the urethra and vagina. Unlike the penis, which is similar to the clitoris, the clitoris does not contain the distal portion of the urethra. In humans, the clitoris is the most sensitive erogenous zone of the female, the stimulation of which can produce sexual excitement and clitoral erection; its continuing stimulation may produce sexual pleasure and orgasm, and is considered the key to females' sexual pleasure.

Clothes pins
Also called pegs, Wood Spring Clothespins, 3 3/8 Length can be made of wood, plastic or metal, The spring pushes two ends together allowing it to pinch or hold on to things. (Skin included)

Private and public clubs devoted to our lifestyle. They are good to meet new people if you don’t mind all the social silliness that goes with it.
Cock
A slang word for penis
Cock and Ball Torture (CBT)
Torture of the male genitals for sexual gratification.
Cock cage
A chastity device.
Cock ring
A device, often a leather strap, placed at the base of an erect penis in order to restrict blood flow and maintain an erection. A cock ring must be put on and removed when the penis is soft. First pull your scrotal skin and balls through the ring, then fold your flaccid penis down and pull the ring up over it. This can also be done with a rubber band or a metal ring. Be careful that you don’t leave the ring on too long or you risk priapism.
Cock snot
A slang term for semen.
Cockpit
A slang and vulgar term for vagina.
Code words
Another name for safe words
Coitus
Sexual intercourse between a man and a woman, where the man puts his penis in the woman's vagina.
Coitus interruptus
Removing the penis from the vagina before the man ejaculates as a form of contraception; pulling out. This can be used as torture for both sexes as the dominant male you can stop just before the female slave is about to climax. For the female dominant you can stop and back off just before the male slave climaxes. You can use this technique to prolong the sex, to tease your slave, or to just have fun as your slave begs you for permission to have an orgasm.
Collar
A collar is a training device, a humiliation device as well as a bondage device. The collar is put around the neck as a physical sign of ownership. As a training device a leash is attached to the collar in order to better control the slave. As a bondage device the collar is used to restrain the slave either to a table or the wall or a chair. As a humiliation device the collar is used with a leash to lead the slave around like an animal.
Collared
Submissive or slave who is owned, usually (but certainly not exclusively) in a loving intimate relationship. A dominant may have multiple persons collared. Also: a pup's status, as differentiated from a "stray".
Collaring

Condom
